I get a small shock everytime I get out of my car as I touch the door and sometimes when I put the key in, just as the key touches the metal. Why could this be?

That's why there is a "TOUCH" pad on the side of the door. Take a look at it next time....
It's ment to de-staticize you.

Possibly your clothing or your seat covers, or indeed your seats.
As you move around as you drive you create a static charge witch is discharged when you come in contact with the cars metal. (It is in fact you giving the car a shock)
If it is the car that is generating the static its self ...
I have remedied some cars by placing an electro static strap on the rear of the car that trails on the ground as you drive and diverts the charge into the ground...

interestingly, on my old car i'd get shocked with the cloth seats, but when i replaced them with leather it stopped. a friend of mine with an old saab never got shocked until he covered the torn leather with cloth seat covers. the cause in both cases was static electricity.
