$275USD is a good deal from what I've seen. It was designed by Mitsubishi to have an integral ignitor. Ignitors dont like heat, so why in the world would you put one by a hot cylinder head? The updated ones supposedly have more heat resistant ignitors though.
Mike P's site has a good overview of what is required to fix this, if you want to do it yourself. http://home.golden.net/~trinity/dist/dist.htm
------------------
David Coleman
1993 Mazda MX-3 GS Special Edition
V6 engine info | KL FAQ | ECU reprogramming | K series Image cache | Probetalk Archive Search
Support OPEC: Buy an SUV

Yeah, my distributor had to be replaced after breaking down the day after i bought it. It was $290 to fix, but that includes towing. Image

I'm in the process of dealing with it right now. I checked the link in David's post and it hit the nail right on the head for me as far as symptoms.
I've been trying to get a distributor with little success. I went to NAPA and the one I got was cracked on the black plastic, so I had them order another one, and it had the same problem. I got my money back and have been looking for another place to get one ever since. After reading that link, I found that the NAPA ones are sorry excuses for refirbished crap. I guess all you really need is the "guts" to the distributor and just rebuild it right? Now all I have to do is find the "guts" so that I can do it.
If anyone has any idea on where I can get them, (good parts, not crappy ones) send me an e-mail: bryanwatkin@hotmail.com
[This message has been edited by 92MX3GS (edited September 19, 2001).]

As far as price goes, the first shop i took it to wanted to charge me $480. Then, they called me back, and said that someone screwed up, and the price they told me was for the 4 cylider model. They wanted $690    for the six cylinder, including labor. Naturally i took it somewhere else.

Geez! I hope I don't end up paying that much for a distributor!
I guess my best bet then is to go to a Mazda dealer. I kinda hate to get a whole distributor when all I need is the ignitor, but if it ends up being a better deal, might as well get the whole thing.

Check these sites...
nopionline.com
mazdarecycling.com
mazdasurplus.com
Check with people on this board who are junking cars too...maybe they have one that you can get for a decent price. Are these $600 prices your getting with or without the core value? That's a LOT of money...

I'm going to go after work today and try to get a junkyard distributor/ignitor as a temporary replacement until I can get a hold of a good new one. I need to get this car back on the road if even for a little while. I don't know how common the 1.8L DOHC's are in my area, but I think that there are a lot of probes. Would a ford distributor/ignitor work in mine?

Heck, at 600 bucks, you could start considering upgrading to a Standalone system. Though they cost more, they also have alot more potential by getting rid of stock ECU & VAF.

I am having the same problems with my 92 mx3 cutting out. I found the dealer caries the ignitor kit and it is 320cdn. The rebuilt distrbutor is 558cdn. From everything I have heard it sounds like just the ignitor and would like to just replace the ignitor. What are the chances of something else in the distributor causing the same symptoms? (ie crank angle sensor or coil)...I have noticed the car seems to have more power when the engine is cold, is this related to the ignitor problem or does it point to something else?
