Ported intake manifold

Post by David Coleman »

Has anyone ported their intake manifold?
I just finished port matching my intake manifold to the heads on my K8 a while back. The intake ports are now ~.3" wider and about .12" taller than they were stock. I went about 2" down the runner and tapered out. It actually scared me when I put the intake gasket on the manifold and noticed how much smaller the runners were. I just put the gasket up to the head, got a red Sharpie, colored in the silver area, and went at it with my carbide rotary file on a DeWalt cordless till all the red was gone. Wasn't that hard and pretty cheap. If you have any questions aboot it you can email me.
I guess we'll see how it worked out at the track... Ok i am trying to piture what your saying. You port matched you intake ie you ported it out so that it was the same size as the ports on you heads right. them you grinded your gaskets? or did you grind your heads? i have a spare engine for my gs an was wanting to prot the head but when i looked at a cut away diagram of them and they seemed to not need it. there in no areas of restriction. i wuold be interested in port matching my intake if you see any hp inprovements. pleases send me some info if you have any before and after track # or hp # spida_buge@hotmail.com
:o)
No, actually I have your Phenolic spacers Image
I don't see how this can hurt, as all I did was taper the ports from the smaller runner size to the stock head port size. It's theoretically just smoothing the air's transition, but it's really leminar flow instead of slug flow like you think of it so maybe that's all out the door...who knows?
I think with the new 4.11 gears I will be able to stay in the 5000RPM+ range longer @ the track, so hopefully it will help. About how much did you gain on the top end from this? A hp or 2?
------------------
David Coleman- Moderator
1993 Mazda MX-3 GS Special Edition
Why get clear tail lights when only Geo Metros are gonna see them?
