Which AMP ? recomendations....

Post by synap »

I am thinking of getting two of these:
Phoenix Gold OCTANE-R 12
----------------------------
? 12: 12 inch 4 ohm subwoofer
? Sensitivity: 91dB (1W/1M)
250/500W (RMS/PEAK)

more
Which amp would be sufficient to run these?

Was thinking of: Nakamichi PA-1002 2 Channel Amplifier
Power Output (4 Ohms): 50W x 2
Power Output (2 Ohms): 100W x 2
Bridged Power Output (8 Ohms): 100W x 1
Bridged Power Output (4 Ohms): 200W x 1
Minimum Speaker Impedance: 2 Ohm
Power Bandwidth: 5HzÐ25kHz
Frequency Response (1W / 4 Ohm): 5Hz-80kHz

yes/no?
[ May 28, 2003: Message edited by: synap ]

Get a JBL 600.1 .... They cost like $175 and will run 300watts+ to each sub, giving them plenty of power...

Hey man if you are going to do things right i'd say go with two soundsteam tarantula TR700 or TR880's. but i'd say if you have your heart set on those two you have listed they are both good amps so go with what you like. If you want to go with the tarantula let me know I can get the TR700 for $489.00 and the TR880 for $599.00. Those are good prices but dont take my word for it do a lil reasearch and see what prices you can get them for. If anybody else on this board can get them cheaper please let me know.

Dude, I recommend getting a phoenix Amp to go along with your Octane R's. Phoenix has under-rated power. I got 2 10" Tantrum X, running off a 500.2. And I am hitting low 130s in a sealed box
93 GS, KLZE, KL31 ECU, Centerforce Stg 3 Clutch, 2.25" Exhaust w/Flowmaster muffler, OBX Headers, Pheno Spacers, Front & rear X-drilled/slotted Rotors, KVR pads, SS brake & clutch lines, Ractive Filter, H&R Springs, Tokico Blue Struts, 8mm Accel Wires, MSD 6A w/ Blaster 2 Coil, HVAC Indiglo Panel. *Sold*
06 Eclipse GT *Sold*
08 Evo X GSR *Current*

Synap,
Yes the JBL 600.1 will run 300watts plus to each sub when run in 2ohm mode. Just hook up 2 4ohm single voice coil subs up to it.

Well I think I found an amp that will do and that's not too pricey :)

Alpine MRD-M500 V12 Mono Amp D-Class 500W
250 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
500 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
MOSFET power supply and output stage
STAR Topology for cleaner sound
Bass Engine features:
low-pass digital crossover, 30-200 Hz, 24 dB/octave
variable subsonic filter (15-50 Hz in 5 Hz steps)
parametric EQ variable from 30-160 Hz
Bass Compensator enhances low-end definition

Thoughts?
thx

well for alpine you are paying for the name. for the price of that amp u could get a lanzer 1000d which is 500w rms @2ohm and is a nice amp. alpines are nice don't get me wrong but for the money u can get an amp that is just as good with more power

power isnt everything :) the cleaner the power the better it sounds :) i always check out new stuff at best buy (though i wont buy anything from them) and listening to the sony and jensen amps then firing up a rockford, it sounds MUCH better with the rockford...there are countless brands better than rockford too hehe...
just compare our mx-3's it to a big rig truck, i could say my lil mx-3 has about 140hp and that big rig over there has about 1,000hp...sure its got more power but will it ever beat me in a race? ;)

Forget The Octane_r subs and speakers. They aren't very good. The amps are decent, though. But this is the first series of amps from Phoenix Gold that lists a 'max power' rating instead of a straight up RMS power rating. Make sure you find the RMS power ratings on those amps before you decide. I believe you have to download the manuals at Phoenix Gold to find the actual power on them, though. I remember the 3,000 watt amp really only does 2,000 watts RMS and the 1,500 watt amp really only does 1,000 watts RMS. You can also find them pretty cheap at www.carmedia1.com
Also, the aforementioned JBL BP600.1 or even BP1200.1 are good economy amps with lots of power.
For subs, it really depends on your power needs, your space needs, and your budget. And don't get too caught up in specs for subs, either. It's hard to compare specs on one sub vs. specs on another sub from another brand since they might use different test conditions and limits.
Brands you might want to look at are JL, Crystal Mobilesound, JBL, Treo, and Image Dynamics.
