What are OHMS

Post by finchuck »

what are ohms? would more ohms or less ohms be better? when hooking up my home stereo in the back there are two ports, one is 4 ohms and one is 16 ohms.

I'm not exactly sure about what they are other than a mesurment of electric current, but I do know how it work.

an ohm is the standard measure of resistance to current in a circut. i'm not going to get to technical but basicly less ohms = more curent flow = more power. but be carefull not to go lower than the amp i rated or you get some cool blue smoke and by by amp!

An ohm is a unit of Impedance such that when one volt of potential is applied to it one amp of current flows through it.
Look at the spec sheets for your amps & speakers, match the rated output impedance of the amplifier to the impedance of the speaker for maximum power to the speaker. You should NOT run speakers with lower impedance than that rated for the amp. Also if you're going to run stuff in parallel, or series you should find the total impedance of the speaker system before hooking it up to the amp. Parallel impedance=1/(1/Speaker1+1/Speaker2+1/Speaker3...). Series Impedance=Speaker1+Speaker2....
If in doubt, hook up an Multi-meter to the speaker system without an amp hooked up to it, and measure resistance and multiply by about 1.2. This is roughly the impedance of your system.
There's a lot more to it than that, but you don't have to be an Electrical Engineer to hook up your system.

LOL, don't have to be GOOD amp, but their not worth the $$$ if it don't have one.
