It really is true, 197hp with the automatic and 238 with the 6-speed are the official numbers now for the Rx8.<p>On a similar sad note, Mazda has also just announced revised horsepower ratings for 1992-1993 Mx3's. With the automatic transmission, the 1.6 liter SOHC 4 cylinder officially produces 14HP, down from the 88HP claimed from the factory. <p>Ok, I MAY have just made that up, but those of you with the automatic like me, how many of you doubt it......? :p

My buddy has a 2003.5 Mazdaspeed and he thinks they're going to do the same with his and also the 6.
I read on another forum that some foreign car companies do it to make their engines seem as powerful as the big 3, as you can't beat American muscle. But to me that doesn't make sense, as the big 3 own these smaller foreign companies like Ford owning Mazda. Mazda makes some engines for Ford, Mitsubishi makes some engines for Chrysler, etc, so what gives? <p>one

Someone on the Rx8 forum said Ford also did this with the Cobra when it came out. Whats really amazing is people are actually turning their Rx8's back into Mazda because of this, "out of principle". More honestly its probably "buyers remorse". I really hate to say it, as much as I love my Rx7s, if the Rx8 didnt have a rotary engine or the neat Rx8 logo on the back I probably wouldnt pay much attention to it. I'll patiently wait for a revamped Rx7, and I dont care if they overstate the HP numbers by 25%, if it looks anything like the 3rd gen. I'll trade the wife for it...

I also heard that the power loss to the wheels was over 30%. However, this revision still brings it pretty close to that 30% mark. I heard that guys were dynoing it somewhere around 170 WHP for the 6 MT.
Does anybody remember the prototype RX-01? Is it the same prototype that will be used for the Revamped RX-7?<p>one

All I can say is that I have done some lurking at the Rx8 forums and if current trends continue buy your Rx8 now because in a year or so they will be collectors items. People are dynoing their cars left and right and not even coming CLOSE to even the lower revised HP numbers, even taking into account what would be considered huge drivetrain losses. Something is up here and Mazda isnt coming clean about it.

I guess they do it just to get the cars out of the show rooms faster and make more money, but then once everybody finds out, thats just bad news. They have to lose money by doing this. I wonder whats up.<p>[ August 27, 2003: Message edited by: mx3TT ]</p>

Wait, this doesnt makes sence, people return their cars because its ADVERTISED as less hp? its not like Mazda's recalling them to detune them...so, people buy them, love them, and then complain and wanna return them because they have x number hp to brag about, although the performance of the car hasnt changed<p>Aparently performance is a matter of the mind, not the feeling<p>"my Rx-8 feels slow today cause Mazda said it has it has 238 instead of 247"

I have test drove the rx-8 and it falls way short of even 238hp. The problem is that Mazda has lied
about power again. how would u feel if you bought
a car that claims 250hp and you go to the dyno and
you can't even get 180whp!
