colder thermostat

Hey just wondering if anyone knows if there is a colder temp. thermastat that can be used in the 1.6 dohc?? Maybe even not run a thermastat at all or would that be too hard on the engine?? I dont run my car at all in the winter!! Thanks

there are colder thermostats out there. you need a thermostat because the motor is designed to run at a certain temp. w/o the thermostat, it would run too cold. plus your heater would suck.

actually without a thermostat your engine would run hot but your temp guage will say its cooler.

how so? a colder thermostat opens earlier to keep the engine temps down. when you're thermostat breaks and doesn't open, your car overheats. if you were to have a restrictor plate or no thermostat at all, the coolant would remain cool and not heat up as much due to no restriction.

It has been said that because there is no thermostat the coolant can run through the radiator too fast. Thus, not allowing the coolant to transfer the heat properly.

But really, the engine and the sensors are all designed to operate at a specific temp.

If you are having trouble with your engine temp then you might have another outlining problem.

You could always modify the existing thermostat by drilling a 2.0mm to 2.4mm hole in the rebate of the diaphragm this will drop the open temp by about 6C. The only draw back is that it will take for ever for the engine to warm up to proper operating temp. Removing the thermostat will do nothing for you. While it will not cause cavitations as has been suggested it will cause such a rapid transfer of heat from the coolant that the engine never warms up causing the engine to run overly rich killing power and throttle response. Back when we were building race engine we replaced the thermostat with stainless steel discs with a variety of different size holes bore in them to control the volume of coolant passing through the cooling system. Recently I've been using some of these discs after removing the OE thermostat and waterpump from the B6 in my daily beater to freeing up some Hp by removing mechanical losses from the pump fighting the resistance of trying to move coolant against the resistance of the thermostat.
