that metal box between tubes on the stock intake.
is it really necessary to run the car?
i have built a 3" intake with a coned filter but i dont know how to attach it since the box is square...

anyone help me...

i did a search yes..

Yes- that is your Mass Air Flow Sensor and you have to have it.

You will need to buy an adapter off of Ebay or from Corksport.

They sell on Ebay with a filter for like $9.

Heres an example:

You can also just do what I did-- Go to Ebay and type in: MX-3 Intake Adapter and it will pull right up.

If you want to fork out a few more dollars, you can buy an RX 7 maf which is the rounded shape, and you wont need the adapter. It supposedly increases the SOHC's airflow as well, however I can't verify this because I have a 95. :shrug:

It is much cheaper and easier to do what Perry said, plus, I doubt it is worth upgrading to the rx-7 maf unless you turbo it.

The Rx-7 Maf tends to be a thing that only helps in the higher RPM range. Quite frankly i dont know where a SOHC's rev limiter kicks in at but it really only helps out over 6k rpm
