is the bpt swap really worth it?

Post by Jteezy »

I'm set on getting a bpt, but a few things have crossed my mind. If i do get it, how hard will the parts be to locate?i mean do i have to order them from japan or can i buy them at my local shop. i'm also gonna run off of stock ecu, so i'm i'll have a bit more reliability knowing that everything will run as it did in the 323, but for everyone that has the bpt, is it really worth it, how long did it last, and please post any other point i may want to consider. I have the money, but if going the turbo route is gonna be a ****** then i might just get a BP. Throw some opinions at me, Peace

ok, for that year, i don't know if the gtx ecu plugs right up or not. i'm pretty sure it does, you just have to run wires for the knock sensor. all in all, the bpt swap is a must IMO. i had so much fun in that little car. running only stock boost, that thing will scoot. other than turbo related items, everything you will need is from the protege lx or escort gt, so parts aren't a problem.

if you "have money", then i would suggest a different route. it's all based on what your goals are.

me personally, i'd get a bp motor from a protege or escort and rebuild it with forged rods/pistons. port and polish the head, swap in the gtx/gt-r cams, get a gt-r intake manifold, get a custom exhaust manifold and whatever turbo you want, and get a haltech e6x. but that's just me. :2thumbsup:

hahaha, yea i was thinkin of getting a whole rebuild on a bp from maztech in tampa, its like 1400 i think, but the bpt engine i can get ahold of is from a gtr =], so i dont think power will be a problem. but i just wanted opinions on the swap before i spend 3k on a swap. A bp rebuilt bp sounds nice, but i dont have money to rebuild the engine and get a miata turbo kit or somethin aftermarket. I think i'll get the bpt since it already comes turbo and plus....instant spool, haha.Peace

me personally, i wouldn't get the gt-r. save money and get the gtx, just my opinion. also, you wouldn't get a miata kit, as their manifolds are upside down. "instant spool" is good, but the factory turbo's are ineffecient. in the higher rpm range, they create a lot of heat. best of luck to you.

i would say if you can get the gt-r at a steal go for it...

but as i was taught re-building the bp, using a 99 miata head on it, and building up the internals can get you more power. so its up to you which way you wanna go. i got a lot of my info and list in talking with the guys at etdracing. so i suggest talkin to them.
i got a 90 pgt...but wish it was a mx-3 bp-t!

I have read that a custom turboed BP is a better set up than a BPT, but how much more does it cost to do a turbo set up on an N/A engine? I had a guy from an import shop here in town tell me he could turbo my SOHC for 600 and something. I guess it all depends on the turbo and parts, huh?

any idea what kind of torque the bpt from a gt-r puts down?

and, ososlo, do you know of any sites where you could get the cams and the manifold from a gtr?

corksport(blah) sells the gt-r manifolds. as for the cams, look for someone parting out a gtx.

Depends on the state of tune really.

I layed down 185 ft. of torque at the wheels on mine that was missfiring bad, and running slightly lean (problem solved). I'm takeing it back to the dyno since the "newer" exhaust was put on.

i had my bpt for about a year and a half. it was my daily driver, and raced it on the weekends. never gave me problems other than minor issues that arise when you increase performance.

yea but see the problem is i dont have a grand to spend on a haltech, and i only have enough money for the motor. It doesnt come with harness or ecu and i heard somethin about the knock sensor being impossible to find. I really wanted to go the turbo route but i dont really know where to get the rest of the parts for the swap for 700 bucks which i will have left after i buy the motor, then i have to find a harness and ecu which i have no idea where to get the harness from. It just seems real complicated and not enough bang for the money. It either rebuilt BP which is ehhh OK....but i might just make it a show car which is not really what i intended or buy another car that isnt so expensive to fix.....rods are like 1700 i think for the bpt and like 500 for every other car. Know what i mean?
