Engine Swapping (Our) Faq -=-1.6 to-=-

Please before posting to this topic, please only post new information that hasn't been said.

I would like to know which(all) motors can DROP into the 91-92 1.6SOHC. I might be asking alot
but someone can do it. I would like the following info.

92 Mazda MX-3 Stock 88hp engine
(Price for engine)
(Horse Power)
I basicly want to know everything that will need replaced, if I was to buy an engine, take it to my friend and have him take out the old one and drop a new one in, everything I will need to change. Something else I wanna know is the cost of things. Meaning if the new engine needs lets say a new throttle body or something how much do these cost.

I'd like to know around how much will I need to buy a new engine and such. Don't worry about labor hours, I can get someone to install it for free. But I wanna know everything I'll need, but it has to be drop in, becuase my friend isn't able to do anything but semi-stop replacements.

I'm hearing talk about B6t? BP?'s could someone give me a bit of info, and if they are dropin or what. This 88 horsepower or less is not cutting it. I had a 93 with some stuff done to it and I had around 120 hp, and it's just hurt. Also the engine has 145k miles on it so I need something with less than 80k. Show me what this board was made of fellas.

Thanks,
Casper

I guess that cuts it down for me....well choices for what I can do. I don't have enough money right now to go throwing in something that has turbo, becuase that requires me to buy all the turbo parts as well. Intercooler and everything a bit stronger to hold it. So it leaves me with a dilemma. I need a better engine than 88hp, but I only have enough money to buy the engine and maybe a few minor parts. Low miles under 80k is still essential. Is it possible to just drop in another mx-3 4cyl, except from the newest year possible, (96) right? So that it has 105 horsepower? And then, is it possible to eventually add turbo to this engine? Or do you have to make it custom?

It's possible to do that. I believe the only other cheaper option would be a 1.8L bp which drops in similarly.

Ok so..

Is a 105hp MX-3, completely dropin, or what would you have to change? And can the 105hp engine have a turbo installed other than custom?

As for the 1.8BP, is it completely dropin, or what would you have to change, and does it have turbo or not, able to get turbo or not. What car does it come from and it's horsepower?

the 1.8l dohc is a complete drop in if you use your stock tranny

The 1.8L BP most commonly comes from a Prot.LX or Escort GT (check the 4cyl FAQ for more complete info...Thanks to G.Harlem). You can pick em up for 3-4 hundred Canadian.
The BP can handle a lot of upgrades (cams, rods, etc.) so you can turbo charge later on if you want. Not sure on stock hp, but I think it's 125-135. Look for a sig with BP-powered and ask em...Like Marlon.

ok, doing a search will definitely answer most of your questions. 90-94 protege lx and 91-95 escort gt are both 1.8 DOHC BP motors.

I meant the 1.6l DOCH for the Mx-3 the 105hp one. That is compeltely dropin...correct.
Now the only question i had was if the 1.8l bp and bpt are complete dropin's as well. And if not, what would be switched....

a search would prove very useful... but no the 1.6 DOHC(mx-3) motor is not a "bolt in" for the 92-93's that came with the SOHC. you have to rewire pretty much everything for OBD2 and to get the vris or vics(whatever ones on the 4 cyl) to work.
i would say go for the BP or the B6T. the BP is a strong motor that can easily be turboed.
the B6T is already turbo though and is an easy(relatively speaking) swap. i got mine out of a Mercury capri xr2 for 600 usd. i'm sure if you look hard enough you can find one. the only thing that you really need other wise is an intercooler and the xr2's and 323 gtx have them stock.
so basically find a car with a motor and you are set. but then again there's the fuel computer, gauges, etc...
but take my advice, if you go the turbo route do not take any short cuts. do it right the first time and tune it. 16psi feels great until the motor pops and the car sits for 6 months
