GT-X was a 1.6 Turbo DOHC 132 HP the GR-R was a 1.8 Turbo DOHC 210 HP
[ July 30, 2003: Message edited by: papa roached ]

i need to clarify that im talking about the j-spec sorry. non of this whimpy *** **** the states gets!! gtx-180hp(from corksport) and gtr-220(from some site i got a long time ago) all the hp specs i know...thats why im asking for the differences of the engines that explains thes diff
hp.
so im asking about the internals or what not...ie cams, cam gears, intake, intercooler, distibutor anything. i cant find jack about the differences and well im baffled. cuz yea 180 would be tits, but i want the 220 cuz its just a better base...unless the gtr has a high boost than the gtx and thats the only major diff. so thats what im askin. whast the diff between the j-spec gtx and gtr? sorry bout the above cuz i just rambled but eh it happens. thanx again guys.

The GTR is pretty much the same engine except for a few things like a different intake manifold (looks different on the inside, it has fins that stick up to direct air on its intake runners), ballbaring turbo (VJ-2x something, one number higher than gtx), sodium valves, a bit more boost and maybe a few other minor things. If you're looking for an engine just get the 180hp GTX, they are a lot cheaper and easier to come by, if you get the GTR intake manifold and up the boost with a boost controller you're pretty much on par or beyond the GTR with money to spare.

brain-thanx, thats is exactly the info i was look for! in other words a gtx can be made the gtr. that helps me a lot. cuz money is gettin tight and my fingers are gettin itchy and wanna spend but im holidng back and this just may help me save a few bucks along the way for a better intercooler or my dashmounted laptob for multiple reasons.. thanx again to everyone.

You are better off using the head and manifold from the NA protege as the head design is much better than the GTX/GTR.

the gt-r is a superior motor though i don't feel it's worth the extra money people charge.
it has better intake manifold, larger ball bearing turbo, sodium filled exhaust valves, web-stiffened block, forged internals, along with some other things.

Your right, the price isn't worth it. For the money shops are charging, you could start from scratch with a NA BP and get better results for less money. You could buy a GTX BP and upgrade to Ferrea valvetrain and a Big 16G and come out on top for less money.

Japanese BP-DET engine information:
BP-DET8 (GTX version)
-Same block as standard US-spec BP
-8.2:1 compression (as opposed to 9.0:1 in NA BP's)
-Lower flowing head than standard US spec BP
-different cam profiles, tuned for turbo
-single runner intake manifold (no VICS butterflies)
-VJ-20 IHI turbocharger, running about 7-8 psi
-Produced about 155 WHP stock, although a free-flow exhaust and intercooler would offer a significant increase
-Came in 1990-1994 Familia / 323 GTX's ONLY, which were AWD. The transmission won't work on any MX3.

BP-DET (GTR & GTAe version)
-Everything carries over from GTX version but it has the following revisions/additions:
-Instead of 2 stage oil cooler, it has a 5 stage
-It has a ball-bearing IHI VJ-23 turbo that is significantly bigger than the VJ-20
-The Intake manifold is ported and polished as are the ports on the head, but the head's flow is still less than the standard NA BP motor's
-camshafts are even more agressive, and are hollow and lightweight for less rotational mass.
-runs about 7psi stock, dyno's at about 188 whp.
-I believe it has a larger exhaust diameter (like this matters to you), and a front mount intercooler (would be damn impossible to find one).
-Still has 8.2:1 compression, and same block, although I've heard that the block has reinforced cylinder sleeves
-Has sodium impregnated valves.
-Only 2500 of these engines exist. 2200 were in GTR's, 300 were in GTAe's. You will have to wait and wait to get one of these motors, and pay a premium for it.
Oh and I owned a GTR engine and have many pictures of the differences between it and my old GTX. I never installed either, and just ended up selling them and doing my KLZE swap. I got lucky as hell finding my GTR....it was on ebay, and you don't even want to know how much I paid for it ;)

you guys are awsome!
as far as the bp to a turboed bpt im not fond of that idea...yea it is nice and could be done cheaper, the benifits of the bp-det(gtr) are just more benifical to me. and as far as the price of it, yes the 1900 dollars that corksport charges and a few others are near 1700 dollars is high but i dont need to worry about that. my engine wont be comming from them, i will be having a friend getting my engine due to the fact that hes in japan for two years or ill have another guy get it who lives there. so that might allow me to obtain the gtr engine cheaper.
now if anyone just wants to post where they got their info from...i remember seeing info one one site all about the gtx-gtr and im trying to remember it.
im not shorting anything on money with this. for i am planning and saving for this swap. im not gonna short my self on cash and have this turn up half *** for i want this, and i dont care how long it takes me, i want this to be a car i will roll to you guys and a mx-3 meet and have you guys say damn...you did the work and good job. thats more of what im after....the speed is right there too! thanx again to everyones help and anyones future post.

if you want the gt-r, that's cool. if you plan on building up this motor(ie, rods, pistons, etc) it's NOT worth getting the gt-r. the gt-r is a better starting point, but if you're going to build it up, you're wasting your money. if you're worried about the bp block(n/a bp and gtx)...dave was running a n/a bp block. upgrading internals and getting an n/a head...you're in business.
or, you can just buy my car :D
[ August 01, 2003: Message edited by: cre8v mx3 ]
