Engine or Drivetrain knock??

Post by maldo »

Last week on my way to work I started to hear a weird noise. It started when I turned onto Taylor after leaving my place. The noise sounded like a vibration or a rattle of some sort. I can't feel it under acceleration or under steady power, only when decelerating. It isn't felt in the brakes so I have ruled those out. It doesn't happen when turning...unless slowing down in the turn. I can actually feel it in the shift knob. At first I thought it was a loose bolt, I have retightened my hood pins, spark plugs and just about everything else I can think of. The engine runs fine, the only thing I could think of would be rod knock but don't have any idea how to diagnose that. Since the vibration is so strong in the shifter, it feels more like it is something in the drivetrain. Every gear is still just as easy to get into as before, no apparent change from previous conditions. I have ruled out CVs as it doesn't happen when turning. Might look at the motor mounts to see how they have weathered as they are solid. Any ideas? Things I should be checking?

mines doing the same thing. going from a stop and coming to a stop it feels like there is a slight vibration that corresponds to a "clunking" noise. axles/cv boosts look fine on mine as well. i got another tranny thats going back in with the SOHC. i hope it solves it.

yea this happened to my escort gt when i had it too. it was a quiet clunk and you could feel it in the shifter. i kept driving my car, eventually the sound went away and my car still worked just fine a year later.

Could it be vibrations or flex from the motor moungs being transmitted through the shift linkage?
