How to adapt Protege intake to MX-3

Post by azmtbkr81 »

Here are the directions on how to set up the Protege intake anyway even though I don't have any pics at the moment:
1. Buy an intake for a 1999+ protege or MP3 or MP5, make sure it looks like this one:
Protege intake
this is in fact the exact intake I bought "bomz racing" brand :D similar ones can be had for about $45 shipped.
2. Take your stock intake off, be careful to save all the hardware. Put all the parts in the box that your new intake came in.
3. On the piece of your stock intake that is closest to the throttle body there is a fat pipe coming out of the side. this pipe connects to a t-joint with one side going into a pipe below the throttle body that leads to the idle air control valve. The other side of the t-joint leads to a resonating box. Pull off the section of rubber piping that connects the t-joint to the intake tube as well as the plastic connector-you will need these parts later.
4. Go to your favorite local auto parts store and buy a rubber PCV elbow for a 70's GM car. It should be the same diameter as the rubber piping from the intake and the short end of the elbow should be grommet-like with a lip on it.
5. Install one silicon adapter on the throttle body. Test-fit the new intake tube-the one with one end longer than the other and a small pipe coming out of the top. The short end of this tube should go into the throttle body. You probably will have to remove the plastic cover that goes around your battery to give the tube enough clearance.
6. Now to prepare the AICV pipe. Take the hoseL that you pulled off of the stock intake. It should be L shaped. Plug the plastic connector into the long end of the L. Plug the PCV elbow into the other end of connector with the grommet end facing up. Plug the short end of the L into the AICV pipe. The grommet end of the elbow should be touching your intake on the bottom and slightly to the left and a few inches forward from the 90 degree bend in the intake tube. Mark this spot for drilling.
7. Take the intake tube out of the adapter and start with a 3/4 drill bit and drill a hole. I went to the machine shop and campus and had them drill the hole for me and then had to enlarge it manually with my drill and a file. I don't know the exact diameter of the hole you need so you are going to have to eye-ball it.
8. Once you get a hole that is the right size for the rubber elbow, stick the grommet end into the hole so that it forms a tight seal with the rubber seated on both the inside and outside of the intake tube. It is very important that you make sure there are no metal shavings anywhere in the tube before you install it!!!
9. You are now ready to hook up the intake. Connect the long end of the L shaped hose and plug it onto the AICV pipe. Secure with stock hose clamp. Connect the Intake tube to the throttle body using the silicon adapter and tighten it down. The tube should be canted at a slightly downward angle.
10. The rest should be pretty self explanatory. The MAFS should be between the tubes and of course the filter on the other end. I used one of the supplied metal brackets to secure the filter by clamping the bracket down with the hose clamp the secures the filter and bolting the other end of the bracket down to the hole next to the bolt that holds down the coolant resivoir.
If you guys have any questions feel free to ask. Good Luck!

At least that company is honest...i checked it out and they said 3-5 HP is usually gained. Some claim 10-20, which is ludacris in most N/A applications.

I am actually having problems with my idle rpms going crazy right now, so I put the stock intake back on to see if that would solve the problem and it didn't. As soon as I get the idle thing solved I will put the new intake on and then post some pictures for you guys. Sorry for the delays I promise I won't leave you guys hangin for too long. ;)

I just bought this intake and I was wondering if you could put the PCV valve in the hole that is already there... There is a hole in one of the tubes and there is a stem on the other. I am wondering if I could put that PCV valve in the hole that is already there, then attach that tube to the throttle body and the MAS. Then, using the supplied silicon tubing, attach the other tube after the MAS and connect the hose that runs from the valve cover to the intake there. Dont know if this will work, but if someone has some advice I would appreciate it. Thanks

You might be able to get that to work, problem is I don't know first if the hole with the grommet is big enough for the PCV elbow and second, if the shorter elbow is attached to the throttle body I don't know if the wire for the MAFS would reach up that far. What I ended up doing is using the grommet to attach that vaccum line that normally plugs into the stock air box, I wrapped the line with electrical tape until it fit snugly into the grommet. I have pics of the setup on my webpage:
web page
good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

hell yah man!! thats sweet. I think it might fit on the VAF powered cars as well, but you'd have to get the adapter for the vaf meter to fit the filter to it, and connect both pipes before it instead of between it.
I was thinking of getting one of those for my protege, but i am installing a GTR motor soon so i don't need it.

people no need to do worth less modifications WEAPON R has an intake for our measly I-4 1.6L its $170 from the website OR you just go buy a honda intake tube at like a auto store n add an extra nipple for the breather line or just stick a breather filter into the case i have it planed out in my head just need to ACTUALLY do it but ill stick with the WR 170 isnt that bad

I know there are other intakes out there for the I-4, but this one only costs like $40.00 including the filter. There really is too much modification that you have to do to it either.

You can't put a breather on the AICV because it must have metered air that has gone thru the MAF. Also those pep boys honda intakes are $40 without the filter or the proper mounting hardware for our car. You would have to spend $30 more for a filter plus about $20 more for the two extra silicone adapters plus you have to cut the thing in half to make it work! If you want to spend $90 for an intake that is more work be my guest, but as for me I stick with my $45 "worthless modification."

good job man, looks very clean. Did you just end up taking out the rubber grommet on the shorter elbow and attaching the AICV pipe to that?

no... actually I used the gromet that came with the kit. I bought a different PCV elbow - its the same as stock on one side, but the other end is a little smaller diameter. I bored the hole on the intake out a little more with a Dremel, and slid it right in there. Worked out perfect.
