I know the feeling. The car seems to be gasping for air over 4500rpm, I'm installing a cone filter as soon as the weather warms up. :D

Is your engine lagging in HI or LO rpm? Cuz on my 1.6, it doesn't start pulling me till after 3500rpm. I think it's just the performance of the car. It's just not a really powerful thing w/88 hp (on 92-93). You should get the intake and definitely bigger spark plug wires, stronger spark plugs and perhaps a bigger distributor as well. I would not consider an exhaust unless you consistently rev it at 5000rpm+ every shift. Later!

they help with acceleration b/c of an increase in the power/energy delivered to the plugs, so, inturn they can give off a better spark.
heres what I've done to my car to get it to where it is now; having modded N/A Eclipses not be able to pull on me:
Jacob's Electronics I.C.E. Pak(ignition,coil,wires)
Plugs
2 1/4" exhaust w/ a high flow CATCO Cat. to a Bomb Muffler
APEX'i Super AFC
custom intake with an 88 N/A RX-7 MAF & Foam filter w/ a ram air set up
I've got a ZEX kit that im gonna put on this weekend
and hopefully by the end of the summer i will have turboed my motor.
hope this gives some ideas.
