stalling out on the road

I am not quite sure what the problem is. My car has been working fine and then all of a sudden today when i was driving the car began to shimmy and shake and a loss of major power and then it died. So, i pulled into the nearest parking lot and called a buddy of mine to to come give me a boost because i figure it might be the battery going totally dead, because before the car decided to do this the cd player stoped. However, i got the car started in no time and pulled away heading to the local ski park, but i got about 1 kilometer away when i noticed that my speedometer and tach where going crazy and then they both just droped to zero and the car died again. So i am not sure what the problem is, maybe the altenator..i don't know?
