yeah, the only thing that needs to be done is the drive shaft. you have to use the BPT/BPD joint shaft bracket(motors are the same externally)and the mx-3 shaft. the only problem is it's about a 1/2 in. too long. shouldn't be too hard to do. but yes, they are both awd cars. the tranny mounts up other than that. holds up pretty good as well. you'll also need a bigger fuel pump, boost controller, apex'i SAFC, custom down pipe(new exhaust recommended), upgraded clutch(stage 2 or 3, depending on the motor you go with), an intercooler(you'll need a bigger one for the BPD than you would for the BPT),and i believe you'll need a blow-off valve, and a air/fuel gauge and a boost gauge. the car will do fine with the stock ecu and harness with the piggy back boost a air/fuel controllers. but it would be best to get the ecu and harness. if you live near a port you can get a package deal(motor, ecu, harness, and all sensors) from australia shipped cheaper than just the motor shipped from cork sport. just my .02

http://www.geocities.com/bat_elof/
he sapped auto to manual.. bit he used a 1.6L i believe tranny.
now he states he used a 1.8L motor. Did he use another tranny when he did this swap? Did I mesread or overlook something?

he swapped in a 1.6 mtx cause at the time he had a custom b6t. when that motor messed up, he swapped in the BPT and kept the "stock" 1.6 tranny

Um the 1.8L requires a 1.8L tranny from a Protege, I believe.

correct if i'm wrong(cause i'm not 100% sure here) the escort/protege use the same motor as the n/a bp series motor but they also use the F25M-R tranny...same one that's in the mx-3(4cyl). the stock tranny from the mx-3 "will" bolt up. i e-mailed the guy at the link above and he told me that he used the stock tranny. he also said he talked to a mazda tech and was told these tranny's are very strong. i'm curious if the mx-3(v6) tranny will work. i haven't looked at one though

i talked to derrick at corksport and he said that for the BPT i think (the 180 hp one) that you need to have the ecu reprogrammed and a transmission from a 90-94 DOHC protege. he said that it should just bolt up and that you dont have to do any suspension mods. the only thing i was wondering was if the protge 90-94 DOHC tranny have better gearing than the mx-3 4 cyl DOHC. i plan on doing this swap probly next summer when i get enough $$$$$.
jerome cline

i think it might have slightly better gearing since the motor has a higher output vs. the 105hp of the mx-3 DOHC. but the swap is not "needed".
