Yes its internal somewhere.

No its not broken and its not exactly mx3 specific. A bunch of mazdas will have this same part. actually every car will but not exactly like that.

Nope! well its submerged in oil but it has nothing to do with oil.

It is the internal shift cylinder in the GS MTX, shown in the picture I found of it in a thread on iMazda.com
