a CF cat sounds like a plan ). I wasli ke "faaawwk...i wish they had that for the mx3's...bastards".

The cowl is definitely a good idea too (btw thats the term to desribe that peice of crap plastic below the wipers).

I can give you my ashtray, I'll try to see if the cover will just come off or not. I hate how crappy it looks, so maybe it'll work out. its a very basic shape anyways and would be easy to make (i think).

You know what would be phat as hell....if you could use some fiberglass OR carbon fiber and replicate some OEM skirts.

Hell, if you could make an OEM skirt that has a Mazdaspeed skirt molded to the end of it, that would be the best skirt design ever. I'd lend you my MS skirts for the project if you think it would be possible. I don't htink you'd have to destroy them to get them to mold to the OEM skirt (but if you do, oh well).

Lemme know if you think thats a good idea. I'm not realy sure, but fiberglass is basically the same as CF right?

Yeah, I've seen pics of a CF radiator shroud on an MX-3. Thought it was from one of the Websites of a mazdamaniac type MX-3 owner on this board a couple years ago or maybe on cardomain?? Might even literally have been on the mazdamaniac.com site currently closed for reconstruction... He seemed to have no probs with heat but Marsh is smart to test the resin temp. resiliency.

Wherever I saw it, the pic caption said something like "no actual performance gain but definitely a 20 Hp gain in the eyes of those who first see it as the hood comes up." Dunno, does that bit of paraphrased info ring any bells for anyone here?

already did that buddy. molded my ms skirts (which i already have) to some customized skirts from an rx7 that i had to modify. blended them together. here are the pics

there's the female mold. might make it a two-piece mold for the top half. anyway's, going to lay a few more layers, clean everything up, and lay the fabric in about two days (when i should receive the cf by then)

I don't suppose you'd do a limited run of those skirts that are already on your car??? They are awesome. I think i remember seeing that thread but I forgot who started it.


I guess you are now the official mx-3 "crazy-azz fiberglass/carbon-fiber guy" now. Cowl looks good!! Can't wait to see more pics & progress. You pwn :thumbup:

Well I like the side view of them, but they are a little too flat for my liking. If he could do an EXACT replica of the OEM skirts I would buy a set of those. (Fiberglass, not CF)

(I realize there are two different style OEM side skirts-- I will have to remember which one I like better...)

for some reason, that last rear-view pic makes the skirt looks flat, but it really isn't. i guess its the lighting or the angle or something. i'll try to get more shots next time i stop by the storage place to get my skirts (i have most of my exterior parts locked in storage so they don't get jacked)

and the cf fabric has arrived today. i will finish up a hood project i have going on, and post a few pics of the cowl in progress. a few problems with the cowl though:
- need to figure out how to do the mounting points in cf. i know for sure it won't be exact and the threads will probably look jacked up on that part. maybe just a fiberglass copy of the point attatched to the cowl piece?
- those parts at the side that are under the cowl, they're flat. kind of hard to reproduce for me. so im going to try to create the top layer of the cowl and see if those screw mounting points and the edge are good enough to mount the thing. ill try to have some finalized pics of the first try at the cowl by sunday. pretty busy this week.

Hey Marsh,

I always thought that a rear cargo cover is too heavy. Its made of a pressed fiberboard and is pretty thick so it does not break. I think it would be pretty easy to make. You think like a good idea? I know that no one will see it really and it might need to have some speaker cloth over it so it does not reflect into the rear hatch window and back to your rear view mirror, but it would be stronger, so people would not brake theirs and would save more than a few pounds.

it would be possible. haven't tried fiberglassing a mold from something wrapped in a fabric cloth. plus i don't have one to mold with to begin with.
