Thanks for the suggestions mmac (and subsequent clarification IanL) but I believe the disty I got was the correct one, it was identical to the one removed and the vendor (probedistributors) were certain of what they were sending me.
Obtaining a fluke tester (hopefully today) that I can use to diagnose exactly what's at fault.
Oh actually, in a hot news flash! It started up last night for the first time in 2 weeks. A friend was cranking it while I fiddled again with the disty cables, it fired up, hit 3,000rpm, and again sadly died. Argh!!!!!!! Wouldn't start up again after that....

UPDATE
Well, I guess my subject has been answered - yes! induction kit install gone wrong!!!
After my baby being off the road for 4 weeks, I've finally given in and will tow the car through to Mazda (nearest garage 30 miles away) for a diagnostic.
Apparently they'll charge £70 to tell me what's wrong and it wont go up (even if it's in for a week), then I can take the car away and fix myself.
Been so depressed over this!

did you ever replace the distributor?
the cam angle sensor ecu code is a tall-tale sign that your IGNITOR failed.
Follow my ignitor how-to on how to bypass that failure-prone peice of crap so this never happens again. Works awesome on my car, a few others here have done it as well.

hmm my mx3 is starting to do this... Imma buy a used ignitor module for around 40 dollars .. I hope its that. I have heard a commoj cure for this is modifying the disty so that you can put in an outside coil. Im going to replace my module first and then if that doesnt work, new disty..if that doesnt work..well outside module and other than that..im lost. My car is still running..today i cleaned the distributor cap and sanded a bit the rotor and cap. Cranked over like a dream. Lets just wait and see if it still gives me issues. Im still getting that ignitor module because they go bad anyways. I dont consider it a loss in the long run.

Well well well...
Had the car in Mazda for the diagnosis, turns out....
....wait for it....
....it's the distributor!
As it happens, Probe disty's send me out a busted reconditioned one, pisser!
After their high praise on here I wouldn't of thought that this was a possibility, but **** happens. They were great about it though, as soon as I told them, peter sent me out a brand new dizzy for me to fit (when I'd paid for a reconditioned one).
It should be arriving today, unfortunately I'm in New York at the mo (I live in Scotland) so will have to get my dad to fit it, but I'll report back to you guys!
Dave
