I got to thinking earlier, couldn't you just remove the bulbs, and tape/glue a string of LED's that go to all the bulb sockets so the LED is resting in them? Then you could just wire the LED's up like a typical LED, just wire them up to the dimmer switch.

edit:

I also am going to do the clock mod.. I found it wasn't that hard to remove the clock green bezel/plastic piece even with the gauges still on.. just remove the gauge face screws and carefully pull back on the top, and then with a very small flathead or tweezer pry the plastic free and out.

Dark Rider, replacing the bulbs with red ones is really easy, so I'm sticking with that idea! I never got around to finishing this mod, because by the time my bulbs arrived, I was too crazy with uni & working 2 jobs... Turns out that working 30-40hr weeks while studying Architecture full-time isn't such a great idea & isn't entirely sustainable for towards the end of semester! Haha... Well, I'm done for the year now, so will probs get some time this week to finish the mod! At long last! It's bugged me so much that my clock, indicators & fuel gauge are red & my speedo & tacho are green!!! Haha
I'll post up a few pics when I'm done :)

The mod in itself is all done now, but Zeke's currently at the Auto Electrician, after I managed to make the Fuel & Temp gauges short out while working on it all! I fixed them twice, but each time they only worked for about 15 mins before reverting back to broken-ness... Tonight I'll try remember to take some photos of the lights. Something tells me that blue would work better than red, though, as there is a thin green film on the inside of the gauges, which makes the red go a little off-colour/dimmer. Because Blue is closer in colour than Red to Green, I should think it would work out really nicely...

ive been wanting to change mine to red for a while. glad someone attempted it before me and worked out all the bugs. ill probably grab a spare cluster next time im at the wreckers to minimise downtime when i finally get around to this.

did you finally end up using the red bulbs or the regular bulbs with the covers? are you happy with the results? i know you said blue probably would have turned out better but what are your thoughts? does it look like a stock red cluster or a modded one...

Haven't had a chance to properly check it out at night just yet, I'll be heading out tonight, so should be able to tell you how it looks.
Took it into the Auto Elec. today, who says that it'll cost upwards of $200AU (about $205US) to fix my fuel & temp gauges, so I think I'll just get a new one!
Does anyone know if, when you buy new gauge faces, (like reverse glow or whatever) if they come with the actual gauge itself? Or is it just the face, no needles/mechanisms from behind?

EDIT: SO it turns out that the reason I couldn't really see much of my lights in the daytime was that one can't really see much of them at night either... The indicator's lights, where I placed a red bulb behind a dark red filter work beautifully. It's a fantastic, rich, bright red, and I couldn't possibly be happier with these. My clock, a faintly green digital display now with a dark red filter over the top, is a little bit dim, but still clearly legible. My heat/temp gauge, lit by one red T5 bulb which I bought off ebay, is reasonably bright, but not the richest of reds, while my other gauges, altogether lit by 5 red T10 bulbs are very dim, so much so that you have to squint to read them while driving... Seeing as I'm going to have to purchase a new set of gauges anyway (thanks to previously mentioned mishap) I'm thinking I might just have a crack at dissolving the thin green film/paint to the back of the gauges. If I dissolve the white paint also, I might try repainting in red. If I also dissolve the black (which I'm unsure whether that is paint or the actual plastic) then I've screwed one gauge up, and aren't I glad to be buying another anyway hahaha
SO my advice at this stage is don't bother with red just yet. I should think that blue would be a different story, though. I might give it a shot at turning my clock to blue, just to see if it turns out any brighter... But Imma leave that for tomorrow. I tried taking photos to show you, but only my fuel/temp gauge even slightly showed up in the photo, the others are just that dark!!!

Today I had a shot at getting the green film/paint layer off my gauges so that my red back lighting could properly work... Seems to be easier said than done. :?
After having no luck, I checked back on here to the FAQ guide thing for changing the gauges colour. Turns out the person who did that one hadn't actually done his gauges, I'm guessing because he had Indiglo's or something... He thought that it'd be the same as the HVAC thing, but it seems not so. There is a painted layer of green & white, and a layer of the 'graphics', it would seem, however, the layer with the graphics seems disinclined to come off, and the edges of it are perforated/faded out into the back of the gauge, making it super hard to find an 'edge' from which to peel... maybe I'm just no good at this kinda stuff...
Anyone else done this before & can tell me what they did??
Cheers
Ethan
