Depending on the part, you may need #22 or #24. However, I normally use #18 all around. Much easier to weld.

Thanks for the info. I will try to get parts of the unibody from a salvage yard next week. If that does not work, I will make it. with 18 gauge.

Believe me, you will love #18. Especially if you're MIG welding.
If you're TIG welding, you can use thinner sheetmetal, but with the MIG that extra thickness is a blessing.

I know what you mean because I am in the middle of changing the exhaust piping on my van using MIG :welder:. I'm almost done but had to fill up a few holes in the process.

Yep. I have the cheapo Harbor Freight MIG type flux cored welder. It's definitely a challenge to weld the thin stuff with it. You can do it, but it takes a lot of patience, and you'll normally end up filling holes everywhere.
On the up side, you have to be so careful not to urn through the metal that there's no way you can run a bead, so warping is not an issue. :welder:
