Mine used to do a "crank, crank... wirr!" noise when cranking it. It didn't hurt anything and I thought it was a fun sound.
It's always a grounding issue with those starters..

I'm in the "shake my body violently like I'm having a seizure while cranking" mod.
Works like a charm.
