front coil assembly - 900$?

I keep hearing about this recall on the coil springs. The problem is when i call in, they say the recall would only install protectors for when the springs break, not replace the springs themselves. And the warranty is no longer in effect due to the age of the car. Has anyone had payout from this "recall?" I ended up having my fronts replaced for about $800. Though, they were probably broken for the entire 3 years i've had the car ('94) with just a slight pull to show for it. If they're broken already and haven't punctured your tires, let em go until you can replace them. They got me by pulling out a broken piece without my consent ("dangerous to leave it that way") so the car pulled so hard i'd be in a ditch if i itched my nose.
