I agree that the rotary will not die. Now that technology has caught up with the idea, we can build apex seals that require no more maintenance than piston rings. Ridiculously tighter tolerances really help too. Nanometer finishes, anyone?

hmm wonder if theyll ever fix the rotarys oil consumption issues then

I thought rotaries were designed to consume some oil to help lubricate the seals.

The rotary engine is basically a 2-stoke motor so not much choice it's in design

except awesomer.

I think it still will go places... the energy crunch is on. Who doesn't want a 1.3L that makes more power than a typical 3.1L?

So it uses a little oil, whatever. Maybe they can design an oil injection system so they can say its SUPPOSED to do that :)

Although, I suppose they've never been known to be efficient, lots of wasted fuel because the combustion chamber is such a weird shape and doesn't exist for very long.

3 plug/rotor, haha...

I've always wondered about having dual apex seals per tip and having it lubricate the housing by injecting oil between the pair of seals similar to a piston with it's rings rather than inject it into the combustion chamber

replacing an icon such as the FD is quite a challenge and would be met with much more stringent safety and emissions standards, so i doubt a new age version is possible.

I hate this thread, it is all speculation and BS.

The RX-7 is staying dead. I'll eat my hat if it doesn't. It died because it wasn't the proper type of car for people who could afford $60 000 cars.

Mazda is currently going places with its SkyActive, a 14:1 gas DISI engine, and a fancy new series of transmissions. Efficiency efficiency efficiency, while maintaining the zoom zoom experience.

I'm really curious to see what the Sky engines will be like.

Mazda said even high-up internally that they want to bring back the Rx-7, but there just isn't a place for it. They had problems with the demand of rotary engines when the Rx-7 and Rx8 production overlapped at the end. No way could they keep up with 2 rotary vehicles in their lineup. the Rx-8 sold very well with it's formula, and will it being discontinued next year, they'll be 100% sure brining back another rotary not long after the rx-8, if not right away. We know they're working on the 16x. If they reach their goals with that motor, it will be good. With the Rx-8, they went back to the roots of rotary driving, giving the experience that the old FB did, and they'll evolve on that with the new platform that the rx-8 was build on, if not improve again on that.

I seriously doubt that there'll be a 2-door 2-seater rotary in the near future, and that's the only true and should be the only way they're bring back the rx-7 name, but the Rx-7 was and is an icon and will more likely be kept that way. They'll just be new rotaries, with new technologies with a new name and it's own reputation, and moving foward without looking back.

To be honest, I actually like the look of the RX-8. I'd take a RHD Spirit any day though, as long as it was free

I like the look of the 8 as well, although I would have liked it better in a 2dr model... But I own one so I must like it enough.

BUT that being said, Mazda said the only way they will produce another RX7 is if the engineers do it on their own time like they did with the 8. "IF" they do Mazda said it would be after the release of the new MX5 and based on that chassis... MEANING something very light and agile. If you know the Engineers at Mazda were given a task to drop 700 pounds from the current MX5. that would put the car around 1800lbs, but more realistically probably in the 2K to 2200 range.

The SHINARI is supposed to replace the RX8, a 4dr luxury sports coup on the 16x platform. Supposedly. It has been said that the release for this model will be in 2014. after the end of production of the 8 in Japan.

The 16x is an incredible design over the current 13B, its smaller, lighter, bigger displacement, and supposedly more fuel efficient with a laser ignition system. Something i wish I could prototype in my 8 for sure :)

kabura design i personally like. This was a modern styling of what we know as the MX3.. But this was based on a MX5 chassis being RWD. Now if Mazda took this styling and combined it with their new MX5 chassis coming out and slapped in a 16x I would be far from upset, much the opposite.

The hole used for the laser ignition is also incredibly small. Much smaller then spark plug holes....

all i see is Rx8 rear end with a pontiac solctice front end. im thinkinnnnn..... about 30,000 sales? if not less for this car. there gunna waste more money building them then they will make from selling them.

EDIT: or a Cross over with fender flares.. hahaha
