No yanking, you'll pull the axle apart and likely rip the boot.

A couple tricks:

Prybar
BFH (http://www.urbandictionary.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
BFH in combination with prybar
Take a break, and a beer, try again.

Did you drain the transmission yet?

I got so f***ing pissed that it didn't come out that I yanked it and destroyed it! I still have to get it out though so I need advice.
Arghhh I hate it - there is so little space underneath to work with. What are some other ways?

Yeah... Right... I think I'm one of the unfortunate victims of a stuck axle. I've jacked up the car as high as I can. I've broken a big a-- screwdriver that I chisselled between the tranny and axle, pickle fork just slips out, all the pry bars just either flex or slip out when I hammer them. This is unreal! Something must be up. I think I'm just gonna give up and limp over to a shop and have them do it.

There is a little circular clip that sits in a groove about ½” from the end of the splines on the axle shaft. It won’t come out because the little clip has expanded and is catching on the side gear of the diff. If you can remove the half shaft on the other side you can put a long punch through the diff and hammer it out that way. The little clip will probably break when you do.

Too late, it's at a nearby shop. I thought my wheel was gonna fall off by the time I limped there. I'll take a look at the old axle when I get it back. I wasn't about to start taking off all the other shafts anyway.

Sometimes I have to take the passenger one out, and use a hammer and a long punch or screwdrive in that side to drive the other side out.

about the little clip locking the axle inside the diff, i just used a sorbent towel to clear up some grease behind the boot,(don't forget to reapply) an had a friend gently pulling the axle out to expose it. pliers took it off real quick 8)
