Plug it in, make sure there isnt any leaks in your intake piping, and try to set it up so that it sits relatively level.

BP10 will work too, like it was said before it just has a trans ecu built in with it too, so you'll have 1 connector on the ecu not connected. With a U code vaf and a BP09 or BP10 ecu, it's just plug and play if you have an escort gt or protege gt harness. If you are using a B6 harness, make sure you have run your vcis and 4 wire distributor correctly. If not, the check engine light will come on and your car will run like crap, then you'll have to check for codes.

my SOHC harness had a 4 pin disty. I just plugged it onto the 4 pin BP disty and it runs great...

What exactly is meant by the codes? Is it the big number on the sticker? Or the little-er ones?

I just replaced my nice one with one with a big S on it. The car runs different now. I can't tell if its better or not, but different. We'll see how this tank goes.

There's the different lettering codes for the vafs and then there's your error codes that flash through your check engine light. The correct vaf for the BP engine is the U code vaf which has a big U on the sticker, the S code vaf is for the sohc B6 or B8 engine and has a big S on the sticker. Basically, the way a vaf works is, there's a part that moves under vacuum, that part is attached to contacts and depending on how much vacuum is being created by opening your throttlebody, it varies the current going through those contacts. The ecu reads that current and based on measurements it has stored, it determines how much air is being pulled into the engine and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine. While the vafs might look to be the same size, current will flow at different amounts for the same position of the moving part. So, while you have an S code vaf hooked up and you might be only using 1/4 throttle, the engine might read that as 1/2 throttle and cause your car to run rich. Having the wrong vaf will make your car not run at it's full potential and be harder on gas, but under normal circumstanstances will not trigger the check engine light to come on.

So I STILL have the wrong one.

That shows you where the sticker will be on a vaf, and what a U code vaf should look like. Your best bet is to find an Escort GT and rob the U code vaf from it or check clubprotege or feoa.com to see if 1 is for sale. A Mercury Tracer and Protege LX/GT will also have them if they have BP's equipped.

The problem is you swapped from a b6de to a BP, if you had the B6 sohc, it would be just a straight shot, run 2 wires for vics and your 4th wire for the disty and be done. Since you have the B6de harness though, it'll look more like the 2nd gen BP connectors I believe. I'm not sure if the actual maf on that will work because those are obd2 i'm pretty sure. Can you take a pic of the vaf you had for the B6de and the connector and I'll find out for sure. By the sounds of it though, you might have to look for a BP, B8 or B6 sohc harness and toss that in.
