But my furnace turned on, and now my entire house smells like spray paint. If you have a family, painting in basement is not a good idea. You get reemed out, so do it when they aren't home :)

I got my GS wraparound spoiler on. Not bad for 20 bucks, plus 12 in paint. You all know what it looks like, I don't think I'll bother with pictures. I contact cemented the rubber seal back on, be careful with it, it sticks to paint and never comes off, and yellow globs look rediculous against a black car... oh and I'm recieving some smoked altezzas from 2fazed. :)
I've painted my injection manifold... low gloss black. oh, and you all know how on the SOHC and DOHC injection manifold it says, obviously, INJECTION. I pulled that off. whateer glue they used, its insane. I tried solvents, everything. what worked best was HOT water and a paint scraper. Engine Glue is killer. Anyway... to the point.
I want to machine something into the plain rectangle revealed. I was thinking something cool, like MX-3.COM or INJECTION in huge stamp letters, or "MY SOHC ROCKS"
Something along those lines :P I can use any font. Ideas?

I had something important to say, I forgot...
5 mins later..
oh yeah, my alarm remote came in the mail. I press the button and the light lights up. Now I just need to figure out how to program it. something about cutting wires to match the code... its too dark now, but I'll look at it tomorrow or something :)

Painted my wiper arms today. Black, they were chipped and eww June 10th 08

BP PLANS

When I go BP, I want a sweet set up.

Engine
Bp, hopefully from a protege so I don't have to grind off the 'ford'

http://web2.iadfw.net/theman/protegefaq/engine.html

Type: BP-ZE
1.8 liter DOHC engine
Displacement: 1839cc
Cylinders: 4
Valvetrain: DOHC 16 valve
Horsepower: 125 @ 6500rpm
Torque: 114 lbs/ft @ 4500rpm
Bore & Stroke: 83 x 85mm
Compression Ratio: 9.0:1
Induction Type: Natural
Redline: 7000rpm
Alternator output: 12V, 65A
Ignition type: single electronic coil, distributor
Fuel system: Multipoint EFI
Manual Transmission type: G5M-R, G25M-R

Type: BP-DE
1.8 liter DOHC engine
Displacement: 1839cc
Cylinders: 4
Valvetrain: DOHC 16 valve
Horsepower: 122 @ 6500rpm
Torque: 117 lbs/ft @ 4500rpm
Bore & Stroke: 83 x 85mm
Compression Ratio: 9.1:1
Induction Type: Natural
Redline: 7000rpm
Alternator output: 12V, 70A
Ignition type: single electronic coil, distributor
Fuel system: Multipoint EFI
Manual Transmission type: G25M-5 (1995) F25M-R(1996)

If they fit...

FS-DE
130HP 135lbs/ft 2.0L

FS-ZE
168HP 131lbs/ft 2.0L

Tranny

-G5M-R 1990-1991 1st generation 1.8 liter DOHC (BPZE) 2WD Protegé
-G25M-R 1992-1994 1st generation and 1995 2nd generation 1.8 liter DOHC(BPZE) 2WD Protegé
-F5M-R 1990-1991 1st generation 1.6 liter DOHC(????) and 1.8 liter SOHC(B8-ME) 2WD Protegé
-F25M-R 1992-1994 1st generation 1.6 liter DOHC(????) and 1.8 liter SOHC(B8-ME), 2nd generation 1.5 liter(Z5DE),1996-1998 2nd generation 1.8 liter(BPDE), and 3rd generation Protegé (105HP 1.6L ZMDE, 122HP 1.8L FPDE, 130HP 2.0L FSDE, 168hp FSZE(Mazdaspeed version 173HP), 170HP 2.0L Turbo FSDET)

In my world, lower gear means low engine speed high wheel speed
Higher gearing means higher engine speed lower wheel speed.
High gear is 1st, low gear is 5th. Like my bike.
Longer gearing means lower FD.

-I like the idea of the G series tranny, for the better acceleration, but I want 5th gear swap for easier cruising.

http://www.lloyd1.com/theman/protegefaq ... ssion.html

That is a compliacted site. Its for proteges, so I need to know for sure what the exact tranny codes are for each engine I am interested in.... because B6ME is listed something like 4 times with different trannies, because lots of different years/models use it...

F SERIES (F25M-R) (Mated to my B6ME) I think....
1st - 3.416:1
2nd - 1.842:1
3rd - 1.290:1
4th - 0.918:1
5th - 0.731:1
FD - 4.105:1

F SERIES (F5M-R) (Protege Model Year 90-91)
1st - 3.416:1
2nd - 1.8242:1
3rd - 1.290:1
4th - 0.918:1
5th - 0.731:1
FD - 4.105:1

G SERIES (G5M-R) 1st generation (90-91) 1.8 liter DOHC Protege. Mated to a BPZE
1st - 3.307:1
2nd - 1.833:1
3rd - 1.310:1
4th - 1.030:1
5th - 0.795:1
FD - 4.105:1

G SERIES (G25M-R) from PROTEGE LX/Canadian GT (Mated to BPZE, 92-94)(BP-DE, 95)

1st - 3.307:1
2nd - 1.833:1
3rd - 1.310:1
4th - 1.030:1
5th - 0.795:1
FD - 4.105:1

Anyone know other transmission codes? such as the v6 MX3, MX6, and 626?

-I want to swap out the 5th gear for sure, I want lower RPM's at cruising speed 60MPH/100km/h because I live in the boonies and need to drive at least 15km to get to nearest town, and 60 to city. I want to take this from....

626 Fifth Gear Ratio 0.76:1
F series tranny 5th gear stock ratio? (F5M-R 0.731:1) (F25M-R 0.731:1)
G series tranny 5th gear stock ratio? (G5MR - 0.795:1) (G25M-R 0.795:1)
'86 323 way to hard to find. 0.68:1
What does the MX-6 use? G series.

This perplexes me. What do I have wrong? Atm, I see it as the F series having lowest gearing... 0.731:1 F / 0.795:1 G / 0.76:1 626

This is hard to know, because EVERY SINGLE FREAKING TRANNY has some minor variations for each model/year and its IMPOSSIBLE to geather all that info... Is the gear ratio stamped on the gears?

-Fidanza 9lb flywheel
-Clutch (undecided on type. Reccomendations?)
-Royal Purple!

Suspension
-Filled motor mounts. I count this as suspension. They suspend, do they not?
-Springs, Struts, and strut caps? not sure on the name of all the parts. I could point at it though :). (atm, I fear mine bashing though the rust and my car slamming to the ground in the middle of a 50kph corner)
-Strut bars, F & B most likely home made.
-GS tie between the lower front and rear suspension (called tie bar?)

Intake/Exhaust
-2" full (or catback, depends on moola) exhaust.
-(3"?) CAI w/ dual cones. My thinking is that I'll hide one and put one in an ram-airish place, so if one waterlogs, the other will still operate.

wytbishop wrote:In that link, reliable people in the know report that the 626 5th gears are in fact taller than the other G series cars. Yoda on this site has also said that he at one time had taken a 5th gear set from an 86' 323 GTR (Not totally certain there) for a really tall 0.68:1 5th gear ratio but that the plugs fouled because the rpm was too low at cruising speeds.

I haven't read that post in a while, I didn't remember that detail. I've heard the 323 gear swap too, I think that's in the thread at iMazda, not sure, but it's not something I've personally looked into, i'm not interested in swapping out the 5th gear. But if you want more info on it, check out iMazda.com, you'll have to register to see the thread, but there's a good one about the tranny gears and LSD.

707-MX3 wrote:FYI for those who are out of the know....the list below details the G-series mazda gear box:

I'm still wondering which is g5m-r and which is g25m-r? And if they are all the same strength or if some are stronger than others.

I don't have Mitchel1 on me, but if I remember think that the G5M-R is the 4.38 while the G25M-R is the 4.11 gearset.

Now, don't be fooled from that list, the trannies themselves aren't all interchangable, but it's the gears that are. If you have a V6, you need a V6 tranny if you want it to bolt up, but you can pick and choose from the gears within. I'm not sure if any of the gears are better, but the gears from the Escort Zx2 have better syncros, brass instead of copper. If there's a problem with the trannys, it's usually the syncros that go (usually in 3rd gear). If you want stronger, you could look at Cyrotreating them, the gears and even the case. I'm currently going with the Escort ZX2 gears with the MazdaSpeed Protege LSD.

RX8SE3P wrote:Err pretty sure it doesn't, it has a lower final drive so everything is slightly taller, including 5th gear. IIRC - MX3 FD ratio is 4.388 and the MX6 FD ratio is 4.11. Not a massive difference but 500rpms lower here and there can make a difference to fuel economy.

As for the 5th gear swap, it won't work I'm pretty sure ALL gears from the MX3 and 626/MX6 are the same size. Just the final drive is different and that controls the tallness of each gear.

Think about it from a Mazda technicians viewpoint: why the f*** would you make every bloody gear etc different for these engines that are all so similar? No you'd keep it the same and just change some minor things.

Okay, I'm not sure where to post this, so my worklog will do. It seems to be my thinking canvas anyway.

Today I went to my shop and pulled the service manuals on all the Vehicles that may relate to my BP swap. 1990 Protege, a random year of MX6/626 (I think 93?) and the MX3.

The Trannies and Engines, FOR SURE

Mazda Tranny Codes
G25M-R
G2 - Series
5 - 5 speed
M - manual
R - Remote gear changing (redundant on a manual?)

B6 SOHC is mated to a F25M-R
Ratios -
1 - 3.416:1
2 - 1.842:1
3 - 1.290:1
4 - 0.918:1
5 - 0.731:1
R - 3.214
FD - 4.105

MX6 and 626 came in 2 main different versions in 93. A 4 cyl FS engine, and a KL engine

FS MX6/636 is mated to a G25M-5

1st - 3.307:1
2nd - 1.833:1
3rd - 1.233:1
4th - 0.914:1
5th - 0.717:1
R - 3.166:1
FD - 4.105:1

The KL Mx6/626 is mated to a G5M-R

1st - 3.307:1
2nd - 1.833:1
3rd - 1.310:1
4th - 1.030:1
5th - 0.795:1
FD - 4.105:1

Note the only difference is gears 3-5. The FS 4cyl was mated to a lower geared tranny. Also note that we have the same geared diff, may it be MX-3 4cyl, V6, 626 or MX6

The 90-91 BP Protege came with a BP Engine. BPDE, most likely, I'm still not sure. I think the BPZE came in the miatas only, but that would mean it is mounted perpendicular to ours and may not fit in our bays?

It came mated to a F5M-R and a G5M-R. Not sure how one decides which model got which tranny.

Either way. If you want to do a 5th gear swap and you read everywhere that the 626 has the one you want, IT IS THE 4 CYL MODEL THAT HAS THE ONE YOU WANT.

Also, a tidbit, our rear blinkers use 1156(+na for tinted amber) bulbs, and our brake lights are 1157. The difference is number of filaments. Heres my new lights, courtesy of 2fazed.

the miata bp will fit into a mx-3 engine bay how do i know because i have done it before..

u have to convert a few things to convert a rwd bp into a FWD bp... and vise versa.

but this is for the 94-98 miata bp..

for know just stick with a fwd bp..

there more to it than just mounts.. windage tray, oil pan, thermostat housing, freeze plugs, side motor bracket, alt bracket, etc etc. not worth the conversion unless u know what ur doing or have the time and effort.
