Re: retrieving codes for 96 mx-3

For all those who have OBD1 (possibly pre-96' MX-3s or Eunos Presso like me) and no CEL light - this is how to read the codes of the diagnostic mode, as I have tried to find info on here and with no success. The one element always missing was the small 1K resistor. So here it goes:

FEN ----|<|----|1000 Ohm|---- +B

I have used the standard 2.5V diode and it worked like a charm. Make sure you put the diode the right way - it should have the neck cut at the end that goes to FEN, otherways it won't lit.

Obviously the car has to be in diagnostic mode, i.e. you've got to short TEN and GND.

So a) short TEN and GND, b) connect diode with resistor c) turn the ignition key on, but don't start the car - and read the codes. d) after you read codes you can even start the car for even more possible codes that are not stored in mem?
To read the codes, refer to the workshop manual on this site, the codes are there!

The Elmscan code reader for the ISO 9141-2 protocol works perfectly on OBD-II MX-3's. I'm very impressed with it.
