I was pretty sure someone here said they are running theirs on a DOS-based computer, so it cant require too much. Perhaps a 486DX 4-100?

The E6K's were DOS based like the one I have. The newer versions run off a minimum of Windows 95. I couldn't tell you the exact requirments for teh E6X.

Get something fairly good.. you dont want a total piece of crap. Oddly enough.. getting something too new will cause problems also since new laptops no longer come with com ports.. Might want to watch out for that.. When you get a laptop.. make sure it has a com port.

I take it the ex6 uses com ports then?

Is there any usb based engine management systems?

I ran 10-12 psi on stock engine but with modded fpr and injectors.

I ran 10psi on mine for a while without any issues, pulled down the engine to do some other stuff (port and polish  ) and bottom end was in great shape. It is all about the tuning on these engines.

Tuning is the key...absolutely!

I'm currently running 21psi on my test engine (stock bottom end b6t w/ small b6 rods). I rebuilt the bottom end of this motor with off the shelf, cheap, bearings and rings from Advance Auto w/ a Fel-Pro MLS head gasket (is OEM replacement). Technically the only "upgrades" done to my test engine internally are the ARP head studs and Web Cams. This is 21psi on a large Garrett 30R turbo (supports 500+HP). We are running very conservative timining and a pretty rich mix under boost (11.5-12.0:1 AFR). The ACT clutch is slipping BAD and the car is all over the street through 4 gears (when the clutch was half way holding). WHP is well over 300 probably closer to 400WHP at this point. I'm using my tax refund to get a MUCH stronger clutch and installing the Mazdaspeed LSD w/ new rubber all the way around. At 21psi the car sounds like a F16 fighter jet taking off. Soon to come is a 9:1 compression forged bottom end and 30+ psi of boost.....maybe Nitrous on top of it by the end of the season  Right now the turbo starts spooling around 4000 RPM, 5psi by 4500 RPM and 21psi by 5000 RPM. It ramps up pretty hard due to the turbine A/R sizing but enough lag to assist on traction....kinda...LOL. We ended up using the Haltech E6K because the old school Accel 6.0 SDF injection couldn't controll the 1000cc injectors above 4000 RPM and it loaded up horribly at idle even at 30psi of fuel pressure (25psi w/ vac).

Your best bet for a PC is a PII or PIII based notebook w/ Win98 SE. This will allow you the ability to control both DOS and Windows based Engine management systems weather they are COM port or USB connections (provided the COM port is there, USB is easily added to 32-bit notebooks). Don't go with the older Pentium or 486 based PCs if you need a USB port....they won't support them because most of them are on 16-bit PC boards. Newer PCs will work as well provided the have a COM port and you format it to run dual boot with Win 98 SE on a seperate partition than XP, etc...
