MAF : Mass Air Flow, Used On OBDII Mx-3's
VAF: Volume Air Flow, Used on OBDI Mx-3's
Actually, the MAF was used in late 93, which was pre-ODBII.
So actually the MAF was used in ODBI and ODBII mx-3's.

The KFZE came in several flavors too.

The KFZE is just a 2.0L KF in Japan. They also came with a straight neck manifold wth KF01 cams wich only produced 160 HP, as opposed to the lantis R with 170Hp and KL31 cams as described earlier in the thread.
(noone has confirmed this as noone has found a lantisR motor on the board.
VAF technically means Vane Air Flow meter, because of the vane it has sliding back and forth.
Please prove me wrong, but no OBD I Mx-3s have a MAF. Some of the 4cyl ones do but we are talking about V6s.
1992 mx-3, a couple mods, i'm still a n00b

v6 mxs come with a vaf not a maf, 4 cyl come with a maf. I have an escort gt with a maf. Today I resolved my high idle :D it was the stupid throttle cable .. im still replacing the throttle body, i already sealed up the vacum leaks..when you go over 5 k you hear a strange ticking and get a ush of power..not sure if its normal i think its th injectors making that noice... so can anyone get any pics on the 170 hp kfze? everywhere i look it states 170 hp, im kinda confused here.

Actually, the Mazda manual refers to it as both a Vane and a volume air flow meter depending on which manual you read..

I'd like to know more about that Lantis R engine, I would bet it would be 10.0:1 and its hard for me believe a KF with KL01 cams would make 160hp. I just don't think 3mm bigger pistons, different intake manifold, and Maf would make 30 more hp.

Everyone that's tried running a JE50 VAF with a K8 ECU on a KL block has said it runs like poop.

Just get the KL02 VAF for now. If you decide later, you can TRY the U.S. KL ECU. But most important for right now is the VAF. You can usually pick one up on Probetalk for $30 .... maybe $40 if it's off a really low milage car.

hasnt this question been asked and answered tons of times?
Try teh SEARCH button it works great Especially when you come asking about a 2.5 motor on a thread made for the 2.0 motor :). Your question has no relavance to this topic as it has to deal with a different motor and different setup.

I used the probe vaf and it runs like poop... it does feel better but it runs rich. At idle it will go prppppt prrpppt.. not smooth. OF course of doesnt shake.. I am using klde injectors. This engine is quite interesting in a small way.. when you reach over 5 k rpms you get a rush of speed.. i dont know how they do it. I guess its the cams? the heads are stamped k8 so im guessing they are almost the same as k8.. i also dont see where they could get 30 hp out of intake manifold and cams..

The difference is only 20hp more than a K8ZE...., 20hp from 200cc's isn't outrageous

I ran it for two days, man it ran rich and sucked back gas like it was going out of style. But a DE ECU and VAF apparently works really well on KL's

I got into a ze mx3 today..,and of course my l;ittle kfze does NOT compare to it at all. Maybe to a stock de... but a ze no.. so having the kf is ok..if you arent nreally going for the mx3s full [potential but if you are..iget a real ze. My friend has the curved neck k8 manifold and ecu and vaf and it runs fast. I cant imagine it with the propper im vaf and ecu. I understand from the begining why people tell us to get the ze. I did it just for kicks in the meantime and ill go trough another swap next year. right now I have to concentrate in looks a bit and iw as tired of the slow k8. This is something moderate that can keep up with alot of cars now :)
