Oh sh*t, In ten years I've never replaced mine. I will make it a point to get a new strainer from Mazda. Thanks much George!!

If you releave all the fuel pressure from the pump you'll need to prime the pump to keep from running it dry and damaging it. Just pop the gas cap and don't smoke while replacing the filter. It will squirt alittle, but it's alot easier then priming a pump. Or pull the fuse and let the engine run all the gas out. When your finished turn the car on, without cranking it, and let it sit for a few seconds before turning it over to refill the fuel lines.

Actually, that's great advice to prime the fuel lines after pulling the fuel filter... But just to make it a bit less painful, here's the easy way that most folks are unaware of... To prime the fuel system (this is Mazda's preferred and specified way of doing it, FWIW), open the diagnostic connector just in front of the firewall under the hood, and locate the terminal labelled "F/P". Take a jumper wire, bread twist-tie, paperclip, or anything metal that will fit, and connect that terminal to the terminal "GND". Now, turn the ignition switch to the 'on' position (do NOT start the car), and let it run for about 5-10 seconds (you'll hear a light 'whirring' underneath the rear seat to let you know its working). After waiting, just turn off the key, remove the jumper wire, and your fuel lines are re-pressurized. Good luck!
