This is pretty interesting. I'm surprised that I've never heard of this trick in the 7 years I've had my car. But for the first time since I've had my ZE, I didn't get a waiver and my car failed - even though it's in good shape overall. So of course, I'm looking for anything that would help me pass.

Does the engine have a hard time running with the stove fuel added? Any difference at all?

It seemed to run fine. I took it easy when I was driving though. The stove fuel is only 55 octane. Right after I got my sticker I went and filled up with 93 to make sure I didn't have any troubles.

BTW- My friend with a CRX did the same thing the day before me. He has a jspec engine that was failing for Nox. He passed with flying colors using the stove fuel. He used Ozark brand that was available at wal-mart.

Very cool! And my car also failed on the NOx test. I'm going to the Emissions station this Friday, and I think I'll be stopping at Wal-Mart on the way.

I wonder if the Chevron stuff would burn clean enough to let me pass...

Passed!

Post by 2.5mx3 »

Well, I just got back from the emissions testing station after taking TSI's advice, and I passed with no problem. It wasn't NOx that I failed last time, because in Maryland they don't test for that. So, it had to be CO or Hydrocarbons that I failed before - I can't remember and I can't find my printout from the last test.

Anyway, many thanks to TSI for the advice. :D

Yup 1 gallon to ~4 gallons. That's as much as I dared. I'm sure the more you add the better the emissions clean up. Then I worry what damage could happen to the engine though.

Did you drive the car for a while on the Coleman before dropping it off? I've heard as much as a full gallon can be held in the fuel lines.

Great info. I have problems with a little high HC readings, so I will give it a try. Dunno where to find the right camp stove fuel in Sweden though. Will any kind of stove fuel work?
