Ty question was would a t3 work on a 1.8l not whats the cost of a turbo set up, not how to set it up and not would a swap be better then a turbo. So i dont know why you guys are fighting over this.
Ty yes a t3 would work but like i said earlier and being the only one here with a 1.8l turbo mx3 on the road, the t3 will give you lots of lag time and your looking at it spooling around 5000rpms maybe even more so i dont think it would be a good chose. Remeber your only pushing 1.8l not 2.5l the t3 is a good chose for the kl03.

would a t-25 start spooling around 2500-3500 rpm then? i really don't want to do the engine swap because it would leave my car out of commissiion for longer then the turbo add-on. i plan on later putting the klze in but for right now im keeping the k8

i just recently installed a t3 on a sohc 4 cylinder and got it to spool at under 3500. if you cant do that with a v6, there is something wrong with you. it was a t3 super 60. that engine would work well with a t3,,get a bigger turbine a/r. seems like youd run out of steam ealier with a smaller a/r. i would recomend a .63 or a .82. it will work wonders for that engine.

what size was that 4 cylinder? Lets see an eagle talon 2L with a t25 right at the manifold spools around 3000 rpms know the 1.8l thats right SMALLER displacement and split between 2 bank plus all that pluming between the manifold an then the intercooler. You add that all up and you think spooling around 3500-4000rpms is bad? I think i did dam good and if think there is somthing wrong with me i would love to see you prove me wrong, go build a turbo'd k08 and come back to me with the results. I would love to here from jeff to see what his t3 spools at on the 2.5l if i remeber right it was around 3000rpms.

Well, the turbo installation/conversion in complete.
My first impression would be - "interesting".
First of all, the latest pics are at:
http://www.mazdamaniac.com/turbo/turbo.htm
I will add final pictures tomorrow when it is light out.
Everything went in as planned and the motor started right up with no codes
and no weird smells or noises. My filter fell of the intake duct, but that
is another stupid story...
The boost isn't "instant" like it was with the SC, that is for sure. If I
stomp on it from 2000 RPM, there isn't anything for a second and the RPMs
increase to 3000 then it starts to build boost very quickly. I haven't run
it past 9 PSI, but I think I have the wastegate set for about 11 PSI or so.
I'll probably take it to 14 once I am sure it will stop there. The SC used
to put 2 PSI or so immediately at 2500 RPM, but it wouldn't get to 9 PSI at
5000 like the turbo does.
The turbo itself is a T3/T04 hybrid with a .48 hot side and a .50 cold side.
I have it set up watercooled and all of the pipes are wrapped. I didn't see
any leaks and the under-hood temps are the same as they were before, so far.
My main question is - what can I do to get the boost on a bit earlier? I'd
like to see some pressure sooner, even if it means less later on. I suspect
you will all say I can't.
Are there any options for the turbo itself - differently sized scroll
housings, wheels or modifications - that might alter the boost threshold?
Since it won't boost when it is not under load, I can't directly observe the
WG to determine if it is cracking too soon, but I don't think it is. Kind of
disappointing that I can't get that "REV - WHOOSH" that other turbo vehicles
can do when they are parked.
I might want to try some type of boost controller?
I am taking all of my boost/vac signals from the same place - the nipple on
the #6 intake runner.
Sorry if that was rambling, but its 6am and I've been hacking at it since
2pm this afternoon...
---
Jeff Abrams

Now that I know how to drive it, I can get boost when I need it. Ths trick is to keep the revs up to where they should be if the engine was still N/A.
I was driving it like it was still SC - which is to say "gingerly".
In addition, the wastegate was creeping. My home made boost controller made a big difference there.

so jeff is starting to see boost at 3000rpms with a t3 on the 2.5 and getting 9psi at 5000rpms were im see boost a 3500rpms and its an instend 5psi( thats what i have it set at still tunning going up slowly). So it looks to me that Im still doing good know lets see some info from sean the other v6 turbo mx3 out there and i know he is using a t25 on his klze. And the only thing i can fined right know on that is that he still has i bit of lag with that maybe i will write him to fined out when his spools. So your telling me the t3 should spool lower then 3000 rpms on a 1.8 when it only starts spool at 3000rpms on a 2.5l

Maybe you guys arent using the correct trims and a/r ratio's. this is a prooven fact on the 1.6l sohc 4 cylinder. id like to get a movie of it or something. contact hotsit, he is the one i did it for. if the car was still here i would make a video of it for you. check out his website for more details.
www.colonelsmazdamx3.freeservers.com

Mrspanky, you are getting WAY too heated and defensive. I have been told by people on this board that a t3 would be too SMALL for a kl03 2.5L engine. That being said, it's incorrect. The t3 would be fine for the KL03 engine. I have also got sources (one who has been tuning Mazda engines and has owned a turbocharged K8 MX-3) that have told me that I should put a t3/t4 on the KL03/KLZE if I wanted to run any more pressure than 10psi. This same source told me that a t3 would spool at around 2500RPM. (he had a K8 with a t3  I doubt he'd know) Just because you have a K8 with a t25 that is producing boost at 3500rpm don't mean a t3 will lag even further. That is why I inquired about your setup. I have to imagine that somewhere in your setup you have a restriction or too high a volume for the exhaust to fill (too small or too large diameter piping) Jarid Perry has a 1.6L DOHC with at T3 turbo making boost at ~2800RPM. If your theory of "the 2.0L turbo DSM making boost at 3000RPM means a lower displacement engine should make more lag on the same compressor" is true, Jarid's 1.6L T3 should be making boost around 6000RPM or thereabouts. Displacement really has less to do about spinning a turbo than exhaust gas velocity. Just because it has a higher displacement doesn't mean it expells exhaust at a higher rate or with more force. If you look in the July 2002 issue of SCC magazine it lists a t28 and t3 as a "fast response" turbo from engines ranging from 1500cc to 2200cc. (I believe 1800cc falls in there somewhere) The t28 as we all know is a "hybrid" of sorts using a t25 impeller with a t3 compressor.
To answer the original question (again) YES the T3 will be FINE for the 1.8L K8 engine.
(BTW if you want proof, we have video of Jarid's setup making boost around 2800RPM. Just ask me or Jarid for the video)
[ May 13, 2003: Message edited by: VizualXTC ]

Yup boost starts at approx 2800. I dont have long intercooler piping and it is fairly small diameter. Here's a pic of what I got.Image
[ May 13, 2003: Message edited by: cjthor ]

VizualXTC i wasnt getting heated about the t3 thing i was just giving some info to some one about a turbo on the k8 but when some one come on and said that there is somthing wrong with me well that is un called for because i did not make one bad comment to some one about them or what they did. And for that person to say that about some one that has done some thing that only a hand full of people have done and to all my searching and talking to people in all kineds of board and place over that last 3 years i have only ever came across one person that has ever turbo'd a k8 in a mx3 and he has left the mx3 seen a long time ago. So if you would like to send me to this contact that you have i would love to talk to him. And i have only had the car on the road for a week now so im still tunning and still learning to drive a turbo car so i know that spool time will come down. But like i said from the start i hate when people come on where on just say bad coments to people for no resson expspecaily when they have never done that thing before, I see it happening in all different post.
[ May 13, 2003: Message edited by: mrspanky79 ]

Oh and keep in mined that he is running stock internals so he is going to be putting 12psi at the most if he is lucky so why would he pay more for the bigger turbo if he is not going to be using but on the other hand he said he wasnt to swap in the klze after but he then still is the same boat with maybe 12psi. So in my eyes unless you plan on biulding the bottom end or can get the turbo real cheap i dont see the point paying for the t3 if your not realy going to use it for what its built for there is no way you will get the k8 to handle 20+ psi with out mayjor work and money and time and by the sound of it he dosnt want that.

He still hasn't given us a power goal yet. 12 psi on the K8, KL03, or KLZE may be all the power he wants. That being said, the T3 will deliver 8-12 PSI on all 3 engines at reasonable RPM. (below the 3500 you predict) I'm not in any way saying there is something wrong with you, I think there is a problem with your setup. It may be because you have a 2" I/C inlet and a 2.5" outlet. the air slows down conciderably when going thru the I/C and then it has to fill an extra .5" diameter pipe when it comes out. This would cause the boost to lag a little, but not until 4000RPM. I think there is a problem somewhere else. Could be in the tuning like you guessed. Also, I'm not saying the T25 turbo is too small for the K8 engine, nor am I saying that your setup is crap. I am saying that the T3 will in fact work on the K8 which is what the title of the thread asks. The T25 on the other hand will most likely run out of steam in the upper powerband where the T3 will give usable boost until redline. Also, remember that the T25 will have to spin faster to reach the same CFM than the T3 in effect heating the charge. And a t25 will have to produce a higher CFM to produce 12psi than a T3. So a T3 at 12psi will net more power than a T25 at the same pressure.
I do congratulate you on your K8T project, and like you said you are wondering into uncharted territory. Battosai has been building a K8T also. He's got a little different setup than expected, but it looks very promising.

VizualXTC i wasnt saying that you made the comment i was just trying to explain my self and boostedmx made the comment at me not my work or anything esle sorry if i made it sound like you made said it and thanks for the comments. And one thing i found weried was my car is running about 10* colder then before the turbo. Oh and i havnt relly punch the car yet still waiting for the turbo to be work in (just rebiult) and make sure everything is working right(tuned) so im sure i could get it to spool even faster then.
