Argh.. scratch that last response (AGAIN!).

Now - the car idles normally and is fine, but will cut out at high speed (60mph+). Checked all connections and everything is fine, but if I want to drive it's got to be at low (legal) speeds!!!

Plan of action today is to put stock filter back on and hope the problem goes away. If it does, i'll punt the HKS kit on eBay, if it doesn't....... heh. Umm. Well, let's hope it works.

Owch. sorry about the problems.

I just put my PRN intake on my V6 and it works great. Though I'm a little bit unused to the sound for when to switch gears now.

Not that much gain in the low end, but a lot more power in the high end now.

Only problem I had with it is that it was VERY tight to get in. I also ran a line to the frame there and cut a hole so I can get proper amounts of air in.

It gets worse....

Now the car wont drive - it cuts out at a certain rev speed. it'll idle fine forever, but will just die at 2500rpm.
at first it was 4000rpm it would die at
then 3750
then 3000
now 2500... just stalls.

oh dear
can anyone help? :(

I take it the HKS "Mr Cloggy" is now off? It sounds like ignition, and the usual culprit is the npn transistor built-in to the distributor, known as the igniter.

IanL: Indeed the HKS filter is off (actually, it was following your advice that I removed it! (involved upsetting a few of my friends!))

I've got my dad looking at it today (40yrs mechanical engineering experience) so will hopefully find out what's going on - but will pass on your suspicion to him.

Thanks again,

David

Hmm.

The car now wont start up! - is this synonymous with a broken distrobutor?
I can acquire one from an MX-6 (AFAIK they have the same part numbers), would swapping them fix this problem?

If it is same part no. and serviceable the yes it should solve problem. Just be aware that dizzy failure is a common problem with Mazda V6s and you may be buying a second hand dizzy that is on its last legs.

There were a couple years where the part numbers were the same, in which case it will switch over with no modification. However, I hope using a used distributor is just a temporary fix, as the used one will likely have the same problem down the road.

Argh,

turns out the dizzy from the MX6 is different.

took my distributor apart and gave the contacts a clean, nothing too out of the ordinary. also checked the TDC sensor to make sure it was clean, again, nothing new.

good news was that is finally started today, ran fine in neutral at 2500rpm for a while, as soon as i took it to 3500rpm however, it died again. bleh.

running out of things to try here (19 year old, with no money!)

Unfortunately if the dizzy has expired there isn't really a bargain way to fix it.
If you source one from a breakers it probably wont be that cheap(I think I was quoted over £100), you probably wont get any guarantee, and there is no way of telling how much life there is left in it.

If you think its the dizzy you have nothing to lose by getting in touch with :

http://www.probedistributors.co.uk/

Give them a phone on 07973 315 349 and arrange to send your dizzy to be tested. They are prompt (I sent mine to them and it was returned fixed within 3 days of me sending it).
If it turns out that the dizzy is OK it will only have cost you about a tenner in postage

If it turns out that you need to repair/replace the dizzy this lot are a helluva lot cheaper (£125-£225) than Mazda who will skin you £400+

I assume you bought it used, I had a similiar problem once before.
does the car jerk at all then stall?
if it's not the distributor it may be a timing belt slipping (mine was off by 7 teeth), you should be able to check it without spending money and if it is that you can fix/replace it cheaper than the distributor.

Hi. I had the exact same problem with my car a few years back. Turned out to be the Ignition Module. And yes, it was VERY expensive. Check for all other possible failures before buying that module. Parts for Mazda MX3 V6 is expensive than gold pr grammes... :crying:

Hi,

thanks to all who are giving advice here by the way, it's invaluable.

So am I right in thinking I can order the ignition module from probedistributors.co.uk and have this fixed for £125? or should i really just bite the bullet and buy a new dizzy for £225?

will order it tomorrow (6/9/04) pending the answer to the above question ;)

That £125 deal looks to me like a used (unreconditioned) distributor. The igniter may be working today, but could fail at any time.

I'd go for the 94-96 reconditioned - it will have the improved igniter, and it's only three wires to swap round if your car is wired for the previous model. If you go for that, let me know and I'll email you the wiring diagrams.
