Just a suggestion and this thread is pretty old, but you should allways use a local engine dealer if you can because you can go and look at the engine before you buy it. Most places will clean the engine before they ship it meaning you have no idea where (if any) the oil leaks are. You can also do a valve cover check to see if the engine oil was changed properly, and also look for other dents and broken pieces. You can pull spark plugs and look at the piston heads for carbon buildup and oil. I know someone who bought a motor from a company (who shal remain nameless) that lots of people buy motors from for MXs and it was complete crap. He had to rebuild the whole thing before he could do anything. Broken and missing pieces, oil leaks all over and the oil was more like mollasses. I also bought my motor from Best Japanese Engines (BJE) in Atlanta and was able to go and look at all the ZEs and pick mine then they let me mark it with a permanent marker (so I was sure they didn't switch it on me) and then they cleaned it and shipped it to my shop for free.

for clarity....the K8 ECU has almost an identical fuel map as the ZE ECU....Keeping a K8 ECU is preferred for those wanting to use the EGR...especially if emmissions are done in your area. A 2.5 VAF is a MUST or you will run rich. K8 ECU's also have NO rev limiter whereas the ZE ECU tops out at 180 KPH unless you overide it. so to recap, K8 ECU with 2.5 VAF is just fine. You can still make it go hella fast without changing ECU's.
oh and since we're talking about great deals.....I just got my 2nd ZE yesterday for $600 CDN. that's $445 USD :p
[ September 21, 2003: Message edited by: Darren Hyderman ]

Received my $700($965 shipped) engine from www.japandomesticmotor.com today

It is a true KLZE. KL31-101 heads with KL31 cams.
I have a suspicion that it is higher mileage though. Lots of carbon on the exhaust ports- enough that it would flake off if I rub it with my fingers. The pistons are pretty carboned up also. The front valve cover gasket had been replaced and possibly the timing belt.

We'll see in a few weeks how it runs.

Just wondering, isnt an ECU the same price as a VAF?
