Over here in UK there is a adaptor plate available that mounts onto the rear pods and allows the fitment of standard type speakers

I believe 6 1/2 will fit in the rear easily without much modifications. I got sony explod speakers which had tons of holes around speakers. It took more time to install front speakers since I chose 6 1/2. It was tight, but fit right. I believe mazda recommends 5 1/4 for front and rear, but 6 1/2 fits just fine.
Bungo

Hi all
I managed to squeeze 6x9's into the standard rear speaker position, but I did have to make pods for them out of glassfibre and It was a couple of days work. But it sounds better than 6 inchers. About subs I would recommend 2 12" HFC rockford fosgates in a sealed box, I had them in a ported box but found there was too much air floating about in the boot/trunk and the bass was not tight enough. Both subs are running from a Alpine MRP-F320 amp. Also if you can't afford expensive sound deadening you can use the stuff you use to seal joins in the roof of your house although you'd need 2 or 3 layers it will save you loads of cash.

Hiya, as i decided to change my rear speakers now, i got a set of adaptor plates for the rear pods, they cost me £10 UK pounds. a company called Autoleads sell them here and they also come with the wiring from the mazda plug to universal speaker connectors.
they must be available in the US i would have thought. www.autoleads.co.uk is the site for where i got mine.
