Hey i let my brother (which is a ASE certified mechanic who owns his own shop) read this post and he says it definatly timing. They sell timing lights for $9.99 at sears, buy one and check the timing by the light, it's simple to use, and you really need it to beable to be sure that your timing is correct.

by advancing the ignition timing you will lose some of your bottom end for top, just a fact of life

Re: sluggish start
i guess the only thing i really don't understand is why does this only happen for just the first half mile to a mile and after that everything is just fine?

Re: sluggish start
papa-roached ... was it only for the first couple of minutes of driving then it went away?
oh the tube that wasn't attached to my intake is a vent tube.. the mazda mechanic i talked to told me that i should just block it off.

Re: sluggish start
Ok. When i messed with my Valve TIming with a HKS Adjustable Cam gear i found out that advancing it gives it lower power and retarding it gives it high end power. That was the valves. It sounds like you probably did too much too soon. What i would do is redue the timing with a Light. That will help. Also Don't play with the throttle body cord. Put it back where it was if you can. Also I saw a pic of the civic intake and you are lossing power. It is just sucking in hot air when you idle and whatnot. So i would suggest just buying one for the MX-3 off ebay. And modding it to fit your DOHC. Becuase of the same engine and car design it will sit in a nice cold air box and it helps a lot. Enough to feel the differnce.

Re: sluggish start
What does the valve timing have to do with any of the stuff i did?
And why not mess with the throttle chord? all i did was take some of the slack out of it? They make it adjustible for a reason.
And if my ram air intake is causeing me a lose of power why do i notice a difference in acceleration both in low end rpm and high end rpm? just a small difference but a difference none the less... oh and it will be a lot better than the mx3 one on ebay when coupled with a specially designed projector headlight that funnels air into it.
