As far as I know, it was poor sales in the latter years.
~A

well it ran for 5 years, in which time usually calls for a model change or too dis-continue, they ran it for 7 years in overseas countries, so i guess like said above it just didnt sell enough here.

SUVs killed off MX-3s along with a bunch of other cool sports cars like MR-2s, 300ZXs, Supras, RX-7s, the list goes on. If it wasn't for those oversized gas-guzzling monstrosities I bet that a second generation MX-3 would be alive and well.

Sales are an indication that Mazda had a problems. Not the reason.
Mazda had some probs. http://members.rogers.com/sofronov/Cars ... da.html .
Ford came in to help a lots of time to them. You'll see that Mazda had some problems begining in the '80 with Marketing, that let them gain a market, and with Management, as how to use there image. Sorry, I had no idea what was a Mazda when I was a kid, now I do, I did my research a little more. But Mazda needed to sponsor more there activities..
Well, now, they change there ideas, and are coming back strong.. The new name of Mazda will be Protege and Mazda6.. Miata is always a classic, but won't be that promoted. Sorry to say, but the Rx-8 is an interesting car, but non conventional one, and I might be a bad prophet, but sale of that car won't be that great.. but, the name Rx-8 will be great.
Back to the Mx-3. The car was great in america, Canada and Us ( uhoh, both countries :) Hope you understand better.
[ November 14, 2002: Message edited by: Manach ]

Sales were really poor in the U.S. so that helped kill it quickly.
I don't think they marketed the car that well which was another problem.

Not sure but what I can say is that I've always thought it's design was a head of its time, after all this car came out in 91 and therefor was designed way before then.
Even today when I drive around people ask me if my car is a 98 or 99, a lot of people seem to think that Mazda still makes the MX-3 and they are surprised when I tell them Mazda stopped making selling them here in 96.

im shopping for another mx-3 and every dealership i go to...they treat me like Sh*t. most likely because im a girl. they ridicule me because im looking for an mx-3 and they say that it was one of the most poorly designed car, safety wise, ever. they said that it was discontinued because its really DANGEROUS to drive in and that thats why it didn't sell well. i dunno...it kinda makes sense. my car crushed like a pepsi can. the lexus i hit had 680 dollars worth of damage and my car is TOTALED with over 7000 in damage, but i still love her anyway and i will always love mx-3s. : (

My thought is just poor marketing. The dealership I bought mine from did not even have any brochures or booklets on the model. When I told other people what I bought, they did not know what I had. In the first few years of ownership (92-94) aftermarket parts books did not even mention the model by name. It's almost like Mazda was selling a model they did not want. Crazy?, you bet. Anyway, I'm glad I have mine.
