justify a swap?

Ok I am trying to find any excuse to get a new engine! I want one so bad, a kl-03 to be exact. So Im trying to justify to myself the pros and cons. My current engine needs, all new belts, thats 600 by its self, tune up and oil change, another 250, tranny work 1000+, Im sure the list goes on. Anyways aside from the tranny it will cost me 850+ to get my engine purring again. <p>Well I have a buddy that can swap the engine for me and probably wont charge much more then 200-300. I wanna try and find an engine for 500ish. Ill need new gaskets, i think its 100 for those thermo ones? ummm timing belt, 30-40? not totally sure? and i think thats all id do at first.<p>So thats 850-1000 to fix k8, and lets say 900-1200 for the de.<p>Now for you swap vets, how much am i draining the engine with a k8ecu, and IM? And what about engine mounts? the old ones will be ok right? assuming they are in ok shape? Another thing i was wondering is the de tranny, probably a mx6 one, is it not interchangable? Using the K8 IM and ECU will make you lose some HP not sure how much, but noticible. If the engine mounts are in good condition, you could use them again, however its always good to replace them with the engine out(alot easier). You could also just refill them like a few other people have done on this board. From what I understand the MX-6 tranny will work, however it has taller gears and will get better MPG, but the MX-3 tranny will be better for racing. The prices you quoted are close. <p>KLDE $600 - $900
Timing belt $40 - $80
Gaskets misc $30 - $60(depends on the shape of engine)
Fluids $20 - $60(depends on brands and types)
Hoses $20 - $60(depends on cond.)<p>Other than that the most expensive part is the labor. $200 - $300 for someone to fix it is VERY good. I myself after doing it one time already. I wouldn't do it again for less than $500. Most shops will charge you $500 - $1500 for labor..

Thanks alot man! Thats exactly what i was looking for! Ya my shop that I go to said they probably wouldnt do it, way to much work, it would cost me alot of cash. But ya i dont even know if my bud will do it yet, just waiting on that, then its time to source an engine.<p>Which brings me to my next question, all you ontario boys, where have you got 03 engines from? is there any good sites I should look at? you still need to spend the 600 on a full tune up on your kl-o3 or it'll run like crap
just save some more and get a ze, i don't know why people get kl-03's there about the same price, lower hp and sooo high kms<p>you can get a kl-o3 at car-parts.com just search for one<p>i would never pay 1300 for a 213km but 1300 for a klze with 40km

klze's can be a pain in the *** - the guy i got my 03 off of got his ze shorty after swapped in his mx6, and it turned out the timing gears were fuct, and most likely the internals too - the reason i chose an 03 over a ze as its safer for a turbo, which i plan to set up in about a year or so. the 03 i bought has 170k and i got the IM and actual engine for just over 400 bucks, i cant complain . marlon does have a point tho - 1300 for a kl03 with 200+ km is waaaay too much, just look for deals lates

It will be almost impossible to get a klde(03) for 500. most places in toronto want 800-1500.
japanautoparts sold me my KLZE for 2250 + tax about 2600 total. It was a curved neck ZE and was in like new condition.<p>for cheap engines, try Lucky Star Engines, they dont have ZE's(last time I asked they said they did but when I went there all the engines were DE's)but they have a tone of KLDE and K8. try to bargian with them to get the price down.
