which is a better choice, BP or BPT

Post by Domnknpimp »

I know that obviously the BPT has more power than the BP stock. But what I want to know is, what are the differences between the two? Does the BPT have a lower CR? Will it be a good idea to get a BP and turbo it? or just use the BPT? I'm trying to decide whether i should get a BP now, and maybe put the BPT turbo kit on it later (or a custom turbo), or if I would get better results with just saving extra now and getting the BPT?

Thanks

Well the bpt is built to have a turbo on it.. Forged pistons, better connecting rods etc etc..
And yes it does have a lower CR. I believe that the compression ratio on the bpt is 8.1:1 or something like that. You are better off getting a bpt right off the bat. It is set up to handle a turbo as soon as you get it. I am definately thinkin bpt dude. You will thank yourself once you hear that whoosh sound after your first gear change. :D

bpt has the same stregnth as bp, there is no differnce between their internals besides the pistons.

From the pictures I've seen, the BP is very, very beefy. Closed deck, reasonable compression ratio... you'd be hard pressed to kill it if tuned properly. I picked up an entire escort GT with running motor for $500CDN. The BPT swaps I read of cost several times that. I'd spend the $3000-$5000 or whatever you save from buying the BP, on a proper turbo setup. One that is much better than the set-up that the BPT comes with.

You might even have saved enough to spend on some proper head work.. with which you could lower compression if it really worried you and would be an all around benefit to power and longevity.

3-4 weeks, I should have a prototype turbo setup for a BP MX3 (built by my friend in Quebec http://www.turbinetech.ca ). I still have to find time to do everything on my end, and figure out some cost effective tuning methods and reccomendations (I believe half the comments I see on the web comes down to bad advice)... but I'll post more as time goes on.

Ahh, and while I was in Quebec, one of the customers there had a BPT in the car. It was ok, but could definetely use a turbo upgrade to be a little more fun.
