TB swap ?

Post by projectmx »

I saw the FAQ concerning putting 60mm tb's in the 1.6L engine and got a little lost in it. Do any of them fit the DOHC or are those for the Sohc only? cause someone said they thought they fit the DOHC but i didn't see a for sure answer and couldn't pull anything up in the search section. And if it does and anyone has the ability add that info to the FAQ so others will know. thanks for any help

Hmmm...The way I read it, the TB's on the FAQ list of 8 engines are all interchangeable with any other engine on that list of 8 & whether SOHC or DOHC doesn't matter. My engine is a 95 MX-3 DOHC 16v 1.6liter (B6-DE) w/55mm TB & I'm planning for the 60mm upgrade as well so I'm assuming that any of the following TB's from that list would work for my swap.

90-94 Mazda Protege DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
91-96 Ford Escort GT DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
91-96 Mercury Tracer LTS DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
91-96 Ford Escort LX-E DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm

I'd say go for it. I am proceeding to do it(unless someone whose done it & had probs posts up with a STOP alert  ) Anyway, my answer doesn't firmly answer your question beyond all doubt but I'm pretty confident in Gro for this FAQ info. Let's see who else provides input to yer post...

I would definitely be careful on this one. I went to the wrecking yard to get a TB out of a protege and there was some significant differences. It was not a simple "bolt on" The TPS was different, the throttle cable was different and there was also a difference on where it bolted up.....i dont remember what it was but you just might want to bring along your old TB for comparison.

As for the 1.8 ford escort GT the throttle body doesent fit, bolt patern is different and is 55mm any way, same as my 1.6dohc. I picked it up at a local yard today an campared the two when I got home.

Hmmm... thanks for that info, good to know for me but sorry you ended up with something unusable. I'll proceed with caution to make sure the TB swap both fits right and gives the 5mm increase to 60mm. Otherwise what's the point right? Wonder if the fit would be good from the Protege 1.8 BP-DE. Damn, was gonna look at ordering the TB from "wherever" online for the cheapest cost. Now I'll concentrate on junkyards in my area where I can eyeball the TB first in person, assuming I can find one. I won't get to this for a few weeks but will post something when it happens. Thanks.

Fawk, I never test fitted the B6 DOHC when I was at the yard, I simply took one off to measure it, it looked kinda the same but the TPS was way different looking.

I konw for a fact that they WILL interechange on the SOHC MX3's engines.

ANd it seems the older EGT's had larger t/b's than the newer ones. 91-92's did, i'm not sure of the other years. I just pulled a 92's at my yard a month ago for a friend of mine who has a B6 festiva and it was indeed 60mm, you have to be sure to get the 5-speed version, the automatics used 55mm ones for some reason.

and sorry for posting that in the orignal FAQ post. I know some ppl spent money on that (hopefully not more than 40 bux, junkyard t/bs aren't worth more than that). IT seems the MX3's B6 DOHC engine is VERY different from all of the other B-series transversly mounted 4cyl's in all the other mazdas.

I'm just going to guess, but you guys MIGHT want to look into 97+ kia sephias for throttle bodies. The 2nd gen proteges BP's might fit, b/c they underwent severe changes in 95 when the new proteges came out, but i'm not sure if they were 60mm's or went down to 55. Both the kia & protege ES's that have the BP have basically the same engine, but i'm not familiar with the differences throttle body with those engines.

one good way to tell if the bolt holes are the same is to bring your TB gasket to the yard (less bulky) then u can match it up to the t/b u pull at the yard.

Sounds like your gonna be out in front on this Mazda78 so I look forward to hearing whatcha discover. For sure I won't be getting to 60mm TB swap myself for at least a few weeks. Just starting several aspects of a suspension upgrade, soundproofing the interior, exhaust repair/upgrade so hands are full for awhile... :welder:

The escort gt 1.8 T body only cost me $20 no big deal, I might pick up this engine for $100 anyway ,now I can ask for a deal becauser it doesent have a T body ,LOL! anyway
has anyone had the stock T body machined/bored to 60mm or if there is enough metal to do this.
I am going to check with my machinest to see if this can be done, this week.
