Click sound from engine

Post by Brainless »

My engine (93 SOHC) makes a small "tick tick" sound when runing at idle speed. You can't hear it from inside the car but you can from outside. Is that sound coming from the valves? Should I bother?

it's your HLA's, more commonly referred to as lifters. the oil passages get clogged over time and prevent oil getting to where it needs to go, so you hear the tapping noise. you can try some sort of hydraulic lifter cleaner to see if it helps. if not, you can either replace them or put shims in them.

An Engine flush could also help greatly in clearing up gunk. This would be followed up by sythentic oil of course :D

not always the case. synthetic oil is not recommended on cars that have over 50-70k mi that have not been using synthetic oil before. it can possibly cause seals to leak.

I don't know how many time I'll have to cut and paste this from my previous post (this will be third time), but here it goes.

Synthetic oil has very strong cleansing abilities. If you just start dumping in synth after 150k miles of crap regular oil, of course you will start having oil problems. Oil made from crude leaves depostise on the engine as it breaks down, synthetic leaves few to none (partly because its so damn heat resistant). After 150k miles of deposites on the engine, then you put a cleansing oil in, guess what happens? The deposties are removed! Now, that is a good thing in some cirumstances, however, when you leave those free deposties in for another 7,500 miles (recommended oil change for mx3), they will reak havoc on all your seals. This leads to oil buring. Thus, it was not the synth oil that caused you oil buring problems, it was the regular oil.

How do you avoid this and still switch over to sythetic oil on a high milage engine? Simple, before you switch over, do an engine flush to remove all the deposites before the sythetic oil is used. Then not only will your not consume more oil, but your seals will last longer, buring less oil.

Now, as for actually doing the egine swap; here a long thread realted to the process, and the pros/cons. Engine Flush
