The thrust clearance shoudn't be that much, several thousands of an inch. You can find the normal clearance in the shop manual. I haven't heard any of the b series cranks doings this. I would say it's a problem more associated with domestic v8's though. Are the thrust washers worn out?

crank-walk is well known in the dsm community. it's also been seen in the b6 but it's not as common. we had a b6 miata in about a month ago with this problem.

by what means are you testing for crank walk? That isnt a common problem with the b6. to check it properly the oil pan has to come off and a feeler gauge inserted to check the play. is it making noise or another reason? let me know

thanks everyone. ill check the miata forum. as for the engine no noise when its running. it was just leaking oil somewhere behind the timing belt cover. so im replacing the cam seals and crank seal if that doesnt solve the problem then??????? as for the crank movement i could only tell there was play when the timing belt and all other belts were off. then i grabbed the crank pulley and it had about a 16th of an inch of play maybe less. i was told engines should have a little play in the crank, but not much.
