rpm drop when braked

Post by Ryencool »

No matter what gear im in or neutral if i hit the brakes when im at a dead stop my rpms drop 200 or more, somtimes after a high rpm run down to a full stop the car will die when I use the brakes..I have to featehr the clutch and gas in between braking to keep it from stalling when trying to stop..vaccum leak? head gasket? anyone??

Same thing happened in my sunbird, and it was the O2 sensor.

so your saying the o2 sensor is bad if the RPMs drop when an additional electrical load is placed on the engine?? To me that seems unlikely, but hey you may be right...i'll have to loook into that since my car does the same thing, just not as bad...mine doesnt come close to stalling, but it is noticeable..

might be the EGR system, i know mine is messed up and every time i come to a stop at a light, my rpms drop to almost stall, then they come back up, sometimes its fine, sometimes it does it lots, and the check engine light will periodically come on and off, so check that out.

You should be more specific as to if your gear is engaged or not, do you keep youf foot on the cluth and brake at the same time. Electrical load? Modified ECU. Could be a few things. Neutural switch, ECU to ****, poor grounds, clutch switch. One of the easy things you can do test all switches for proper voltage when engaged or disengaged, change your ground wires in the engine bay to thicker gauge or even clean existing ones.
Good luck
TT

If you are in Neutural with car idling and you apply brake pressure, your rpm drops, right? Tape the brake swith (up under dash where pedal is) apply brake. If RPM drops you are looking at vaccum leak, brake booster hose perhaps. If RPM does not drop, you have electrical load problem. Check your grounds, or brake switch. Just a few ideas to think of.

This is just a case of the idle problem. Try the solutions to that e.g. alt/batt, clean intake components (TB, IM & Check the head), reset your ECU (disconnect battery for 20 sec).

also, make sure there are no tears/rips in the intake hose behind the MAF. it's a common problem with mx-3's.
dave
