Specifc questions about N/A BP swap

Post by azmtbkr81 »

I've decided that I want to swap in the BP n/a engine into my car and make it fast slowly as I save up. I've done some research, now I have a few specific questions before I proceed with the swap.
1. I know that I need a 1.8L engine from an Escort or Protoge, but what are the year ranges? I saw that ProtogeSTS said in a post a long time ago that it is '91-'94 for a guy looking to do the swap into a SOCH, is it the same with a DOCH? Is there any difference at all between the engines from the escort and Protoge? Is the engine build by Mazda or Ford?
2. What is this right axel problem? Does this apply to this engine or only turbo models?
3. My MX-3 tranny and ecu should be compatible with this engine, right? Are there any other special parts I need to make it work?
3. Could the swap realistically be completed with hand tools and a few buddies to help in a weekend? If not, how much should I expect a shop to charge me?
4. Could the swap realistically be completed for $1400(us)?
5. Where are some places to look for a good deal on this engine that has relatively low miles?
I'm sure I will think of more questions later but this is a start.
BTW, I saw a webpage a while back of someone who had done this exact swap who posts on this board but I don't remember who it is. Does anybody know? Maybe he could help me.
Thanks for the help.

1. yes it's the same
2. being that the blocks are the same, you will face this problem too. the problem is the jack-shaft brackets aren't the same.
3. this ties into #2, if you use your tranny, you will have the axle problem. if you get the protege lx tranny, you won't.
3. if with "handtools" you're including an engine hoist, it's possible.
4. it's possible, but pushing it.(doing it yourself will help out on the money issue)
5. junkyards.
[ July 29, 2002: Message edited by: cre8v mx3 ]

90-94 Protege LX = the DOHC engine.
the later protege ES cars have the same engine, but the ECU is worthless OBDI crap. So dont waste your time on it.
