Cluster Gauge

Post by mazdaspeed23 »

Guys! Have this problem and I want to find out if you guys think it's the same thing as I do. So my cluster gauge works fine (at least I thought) so I plug the connector in for the clock gauges work fine, plug the connector in for the warning lights, still works find, plug the connector in for the Tach and the Temp sensor gauge goes out of the roof and the gas gauge shoots down as low as possible. So I thought maybe a breakage in wiring. So I did a continuity test on the ground wire running from the connector to multiple points of ground through the car and Bing have continuity. So I tested the Yellow/Blue wire on the disty and in the connector and Bing works. Did continuity tests from ample of wires that connect to the cluster gauge and got continuity every time. I also did continuity tests to wires that weren't even remotely close to the cluster and got continuity. So my thought is the cluster gauge board is gone?. Does this sound like that is the problem.

I don't think anyone replied since you are/were on the right track. probably the guage cluster itself, or maybe something inside the dash causing the voltage to jump around..? I would say hit the junkyard, pick up a different guage cluster if you can't find anything inside the dash that would cause arc-ing.
I HATE mechanic shops and LOVE junkyards!!

The only thing I have fixed on the car that has to do with wiring is the Front wiring harness under the dash that is connected to the relays behind the fuse panel (i.e flashers, power windows etc) but I read some where that those wires are connected to the tail lights and the tail lights are connected to the Tach connector in the back of the cluster. So just in case I decided to plug the tail lights in to see if it would pop a bulb or fuse but nothing they work fine. But here is another kicker on the back of the cluster you can see the path of the board and there are screws that help with ground on the board. when I was testing them out I tested both ground points on the back and for some reason it shorted out the path running from one ground screw to the other ground screw. I could be wrong but doesn't that sound like its getting like extra power going to the ground? if you need a picture I can post.

UPDATE

Got the cluster gauge working properly. The problem? the screws on the back that hold the board in-place. They have to be in certain spots more so the copper ones (should have known they conduct). So switched the copper ones around in the right spots and bam got the gauges working.

The forum is dead. Rarely anyone posts updates on their cars. No one replies to "help" threads or anything. Everyone just uses the stupid Facebook page because its more convenient. If I actually had stuff worth posting, I would still post here.
