[WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
[WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
I'm looking to buy a 2.5L MX6/626 (0.717 overdrive) or the Protege 1.7L (4EE1-T) Diesel (0.680 overdrive), transmission 5th gear.
Not to say I don't LOVE running at 4000RPM while driving 120 on the highway... but my wallet doesn't love it as much.
Please let me know if you can help me out.

I was basing my info from a Protege site... http://www.protegefaq.net/transmission.html
Could be wrong... anyone done this?

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
I did the Mazda MX6 or 626 Sourced 5th gear Swap
It will reduce your RPMs at 120 km/h (75 mph) from about 3700 to 3300 – a drop of about 400 rpm.
Combined city and highway driving I get 27 – 29 mpg or you guys might say 8.7 – 8.1 liters / 100km
I did this swap with the transmission still in the car. I believe I had to loosen the rear engine cradle bolts and allow it to drop down some so you could slip off the outer transmission cover.
Only 2 parts are needed for the 5th gear swap. The 2 gears themselves.
5th Gear #1
(Primary Shaft gear)
G560-17-611C
QTY: 1
5th Gear #2
(Secondary Shaft gear)
G514-17-308
QTY: 1
Optional new shaft locking nuts (I just reused mine)
Primary Shaft Lock Nut
F520-17-628
QTY=1
Secondary Shaft Lock Nut
G501-17-629A
QTY=1

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
Interesting!
So, if we want the 0.717 Overdrive gears... G560-17-611C and G514-17-308.
But... if you want an even LOWER overdrive... you have to dig through the Mazda service manual for the 1996 323F Diesel. Which has that sweet little 0.6801:1 ratio.
To get this... you need to have a junkyard in Australia, Europe or Japan... or track down these part numbers:
G564-17-611, and G526-17-308. They were used as the final drive for the 2.0L Diesels.
That being said! Now to track them down!

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
Turns out... if your Mazda guy knows a guy, these gears are STILL AVAILABLE in Japan/Europe... pricing to follow.
This is a very long overdrive gear tho... going to make your 5 speed feel like a 4 speed with a highway only gear.

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
interested to see what cruising speeds are when you install these
Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
The 3.85 FD + 0.717 will get you this:
This was the tallest setup, before the 0.680 turned up, I think.

Which Final Drive? 4.338 or 4.105?davmac wrote:I did the Mazda MX6 or 626 Sourced 5th gear Swap

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
My final drive is going to remain the 4.388 : 1, I'm looking at a 100km/h (~62mph) cruising speed RPM of around 2700-2800.
Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
The above is for a 4.388 final drive (the OEM MX-3 differential).Jforce wrote:Which Final Drive? 4.338 or 4.105?davmac wrote:I did the Mazda MX6 or 626 Sourced 5th gear Swap

Maybe you've all figured out how to calculate the rpm for a certain mph speed, 5th gear ratio and final drive (differential) ratio. If not:
rpm = 5th gear ratio*final gear ratio*mph/(0.001184*60)
The 0.001184 mile / rev tire is based on OEM size tire / wheel combo. Calculate your own ratio based on kph.
The 60 is there to convert hours to minutes.

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
So to sum that up, with stock tires:
Only 1 things that's odd:
Mx-3 runs 4000 rpm @ 120, calculation says 3700rpm........??
@edit: apperently mx-3's (also?) come with an 0.840 5th.....(euro thing? dunno?) or the info on the forum is wrong...

Would look for the 0.717, its easier to find. I have one, and know 1 or 2 more to find. Don't know what tires u run but, you would run @ 2750 rpm at 100kph.A 0.680 5th + 4.388 FD, will get you down to 2600rpm @ 100kph and a theoretical top speed of 265kph @ 7000rpm.
0.717 + 4.388, 2800rpm @ 100kph, TS 250kph
0.717 + 4.105, 2600rpm @ 100kph, TS 268kph
0.680 + 4.105, 2500 rpm @ 100kph, TS 282kph
0.795 + 4.105, 2900 rpm @ 100kph, TS 242 (stock mx-6)
0.795 + 4.388, 3100 rpm @ 100kph, TS 225 (stock mx-3)
17 inch tires, wil net you +4kph on top speed. And about 50rpm lower @ 100kph.
That would be 286kph or 178mph, haha to bad there isn't enough power to make up for the drag.
And the extreme, 3.850 FD + 0.680, TS 305 kph 2300 rpm @ 100 kph.
Re: Overdrive 5th Gear - Help
I found these links, but I'd like to know from someone who has done the swap before what I'm looking at here:
This is for the Mazda Overtop Gear G565-17-611C, but that doesn't look like a gear at all...
It certainly doesn't look like it lines up at all with a 5th gear G521-17-308B:
If that's the case, what is the part number for the secondary shaft gear?
This is the part breakdown of the diesel transmission with the 0.680 gearset:
From my reading I thought that the 17-308A Lined up with the 17-611... maybe they don't use a universal labelling system, and a 17-611 on one G-series transmission doesn't line up with a 17-611 on a different one.
Can anyone help shed some light on this?

Re: [WTB] - Overdrive 5th Gear
I have this set 0.717.
G565-17-611C lines up with the big one, I think.
U need only these 2:
(Haven't done the swap yet btw)
Here's some good stuff:
