Which tranny to pull out the taller 5th gear from
I want to do taller 5th gear mod and I know I need to source it from a 626 or MX6 years 92+. I wanted to know if I need it from a specific engine (I4/V6) or if it doesn't make a difference. I'm putting it on my Mazdaspeed Protege for reference (4cyl engine, GM5 tranny, 5th gear- 0.755).

I forget the year 626 but you can get the same 5th gear from a 97+ sohc 2.0l ford escort. The valve cover would read splitport 2000 on it.
Re: Which tranny to pull out the taller 5th gear from
The Escort transmission is one source, the FS (four cylinder) 626 is another. That whole transmission has taller 3r, 4th, 5th, with the 5th at 0.717, same as the Escort, but maybe easier to identify. I just swapped the internals from one of these to my GS gearbox and it makes a tremendous difference. If you swap in the gears, shafts, 4.10 dif, and the taller gears, you get 24mph/1000 rpm - 75mph at approx 3300rpm.
