Stock - KLZE swap transmission question

Post by aPROxSLASHER »

I am starting to look into the KLZE engine swap, and I was wondering if the stock transmission (t speed) in the 1.8L V6 (the stock engine is the K8 am I correct?) will work with the more powerful engine? My buddy told me it should fit per Se but with more torque in the engine I will burn through my tranny's too fast. Should I swap my transmissions out as well? Or leave the stock one? Thanks in advance.

Your stock tranny and flywheel combo will hold the power of a ZE easily as long is its not boosted. It's what everyone uses and is a direct fit. I would suggest investing in an upgraded clutch assy though.

I suggest doing a lot more reading. It's an easy swap and a perfect time to replace all belts, hoses, fuel filter, shifter grommets, fill or replace your engine mounts, etc, etc ,ect.

You could start with these posts. Probetalk and clubprotege are other good sources of info. MX6.com has some good stuff as well.

Trans is the same as in the Probe with the 2.5 KL, torque is the same, just the horsepower is more on the ZE

Clutch is the only thing you need to worry about, the original clutch is made to handle 115ft-lbs of torque, not 165.

Ya but honestly, with your Tinkerbell tootsies the gas pedal probably never sees any serious input. :P

I agree, Exedy clutches are awesome. I have used the stg1/2 exedy clutches on some of the race cars here at the shop and we never have a problem. Its all the cheap clutch xtd, f1, yonaka, etc. The clutch surfaces are made of a single piece of 1000 grit sandpaper, the don't take a beating like NAME BRAND clutches do and they love to come apart(contact pads and hub separation).

Just about anything name brand and you should be good.
