Sunroof problem - 94 gs

Post by iRobsta »

Hey guys! Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, if so redirect me and sorry about it.

When I purchased my car about 4 months ago the lady that sold it told me said the "sunroof motor" was busted. I did some searching and finding one of these seems to be very difficult, and everyone keeps suggesting that it could be my relay that broken, not my motor.

He's all I know. When I hold my hand where I think the motor is and I press the "open sunroof button" (lol) I hear clicking and I can feel something moving where I believe the motor to be. Does that mean my relay works and it is my motor that's busted? Any suggestion on what I can do to totally find out?

Thank you!

If it's moving at all, chances are the relay itself is fine. The sunroof opens and closes using a slide/track design, which is cable driven(IIRC?), I believe similar in design to the power window regulators. The motor is what does the turning itself, if it's clicking it probably is turning... Chances are either the cable is slipping on the pulley, or the slide is seized in the track.

Thankfully sunroofs aren't terribly difficult to remove, but it IS a time consuming project. I would set aside no less than 12 hours of dedicated work time, or a 3 day weekend if it's off and on work.

Worst case scenario, you'll need to buy something... Best case, cleaning it up and re-greasing the track does the trick.

Good luck!

Do you know where I could get some solid info on getting to the sun roof mechanism? I have absolutely no idea where to start.
I'm going to be doing some googling hoping I can find something.

Manuals on the main site are better than googling if you learn the interface, otherwise where is the clicking noise coming from? If your hearing it from the healiner area odds are your track is busted. They are hard to find, but when you do be sure to lube it completely and lube the pivot points as they tend to bind and ppl hold them on instead of assisting it to open the first step.
